A NUMBER of new benches in King George V playing field are to be dedicated to Melksham’s Covid-19 key workers.
“This will be a thank you to key workers, the NHS, and local volunteers,” explained Melksham Town Council’s town clerk, Linda Roberts, at a meeting of the King George V sub-committee last month – one of the last meetings of the council before the local elections.
As well as honouring the town’s key workers, the benches will also mark the year of the pandemic.
“It’s really important to mark this moment in history for future generations,” said the town council’s clerk. “We could even have QR codes [which people can scan with their mobile phones] on the benches linking to the town council’s website explaining what Covid-19 is and what happened during the pandemic.”
It was suggested by the chair of the committee at the time, former cllr Adrienne Westbrook, that rainbows – which became synonymous with paying tribute to key workers during the pandemic – be incorporated into the design of plaque.
“This is a really, really good idea,” said the former councillor, “a very nice idea.”
