IT has been a busy few weeks on the bowling green for Avon Bowls Club.

The club reports, “We are now entering the closing stages of the outdoor bowling season. It is good to report that this year has seen a remarkable recovery during these difficult times. All clubs in the region have put the worries of the pandemic to one side and managed to get down to the business of serious, exciting and rewarding bowling.

“Avon Bowls Club has had a most enjoyable and successful year, under the guidance, dedication and determination of county president John Crowder and captains Colin and Marcia Easton.

“Some club battles to date worthy of mention are as follows:

“On 31st August, John Woodhouse, Colin and Marcia Easton beat Wilton 19-17 in the semi-final of the Officer’s Triples and play the final against Highworth in Devizes.

“Wednesday the 1st September saw the start of the West Wilts Finals, hosted by Avon Bowls Cub, results as follows: Holloway mixed pairs Calne beat Trowbridge town 23-9.

“The Men’s Pairs was an all Holt affair with Simon Hall and Chris Poole versus Wayne Snook and Wayne Simmonds. The two ‘Waynes’ were in command throughout the game and were eventual runaway winners 27-10.

“The Open Singles 4’s (now a mixed competition) had Sylvia Crabbe, John Crowder and Colin and Marcia Easton playing Chippenham Town’s Robert Clews, Dave Williams, Richard Ganey and Will Jones. A very close game throughout, with Avon winning 19-18.

“On 2nd September, Avon had the pleasure of holding a brand new competition for 2021 – imagine Cruising Shield, three rinks of triples. Finalists were Calne ‘A’ versus Spencer Moulton. Once again, a very close game, down to the last six woods on the 18th end to decide the winner, Spencer Moulton managing to hold on and win the match by 3 shots.

“Friday 3rd September saw the last of the 4×4 Club Knock-out competition, with Avon versus Holt. A tight game from the start, with Avon ahead during the game but pegged back by Holt who were the eventual winners, holding on to a 3 shot lead. Overall score: 68-65 to Holt.

“On 6th September in the West Wilts Bowls League, Senior Citizens Bowls League Knock-out Competition quarter final, Chippenham Town ‘D’ beat our gallant Avon ‘D’ team, in an exciting, very close run game resulting in 20-19 to Chippenham.

“On 8th September our club competition finals started, with John Woodhouse beating Danny Holland 21-15 in the men’s Handicap Cup. Marcia Easton beat Sylvia Crabbe 21-8 in the Ladies’ Two Wood Cup. Further club final competition results will be announced soon.

“Sylvia is to play Elise Ambridge (Trowbridge Westbourne) in the semi-final of the unbadged two wood singles at Devizes BC.

“Marcia beat Sue Cooke (Box) in the semi-final of the Champion of Champions 21-9 and will face Lind Young (Highworth) also at Devizes BC. Marcia will also be playing in the Officer Triples on the same day!

“Avon Bowls Club continues to offer excellent opportunities for everyone to enjoy the sport; it caters for ladies and men, young and old and is ready to welcome new members throughout the season.

“The Bowls Club is situated in the grounds of Melksham House, just off the town’s Market Place. Access to the grounds is limited at the moment due to the construction of the health and wellbeing centre. Access to the club can be gained on foot via a side entrance to the grounds, off Place Road.”

  • Council calls on Government to rethink Melksham bypass decision

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Someone is killed or seriously injured on a notorious stretch of the A350 roughly once every 11 weeks, a senior councillor has said, as Wiltshire Council demands the Government rethink its decision to ditch funding for the Melksham bypass. During an emergency debate at full council on Tuesday 20th October, councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning the decision and demanding continued investment in the key north-south route. They also called for the more than £500,000 the council has spent developing the scheme to be refunded.

Gompels has taken another step towards building its new warehouse in Melksham after submitting a detailed design of the scheme to Wiltshire Council. The reserved matters application covers the scale, layout, appearance, landscaping and access for the proposed development on land south of the A365 Bath Road and west of Turnpike Garage. It follows outline planning permission being granted earlier this year for the warehouse and office development, which the company says will be a major investment in the town and create hundreds of jobs.

Rob began researching the history while working with Melksham Remembers, a local history group. “It became clear that while thousands of airmen and airwomen trained and lived at RAF Melksham from its opening in 1940, its existence is rapidly fading from the community
