Railway ticket office closures – have your say

RESIDENTS are being encouraged by Melksham Without Parish Council (MWPC) and local campaigners to take part in a consultation about the closure of railway ticket offices across the country.

The proposals would see railway ticket offices close as the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) say there has been a “collapse in numbers of people using ticket offices” in recent years, with transactions dropping below 15%.

A consultation is currently live and closes on 1st September, to get people’s views about the subject.

Opposing the closures and highlighting the difficulties this could cause for people who are not confident online, or do not have access to the internet, MWPC clerk Teresa Strange said, “Melksham Without Parish Council oppose the closure of local ticket offices used by residents such as Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Trowbridge and Westbury, as well as ticket offices in general, as such closures could lead to a further decline in the number of people using trains and subsequently a decline in railways, at a time when people should be encouraged to use public transport during a climate emergency.

“The main concerns of the council are that whilst people can obtain tickets online, not everyone is confident or have access to this option, preferring to use a ticket office or ticket machine. Ticket machines do not always issue the various options available via the ticket office, and often the cheapest ticket offering is not obvious or available from a machine.”

Graham Ellis from the West Wilts Rail Users Group and a Melksham town councillor said, “The majority of rail passengers now use electronic means to self-purchase their tickets – online or through ticket machines at the station. But sales from the ticket office were over 100,000 at Chippenham and over 200,000 at Bath last year, both of which are set to loose their ticket offices.

“Some of those could undoubtedly go electronic – but many of them use the ticket office because they need assistance in working out what ticket they need, because the ticket they need isn’t available from a machine, or because they’re disabled (including physical, mental and sensory) and cannot use a machine.

“Great Western Railway, under orders from the Department for Transport, is planning to close ticket offices at every station in Wiltshire (and almost all others in England) over the next year, with displaced staff invited to roam the station with iPads to help customers. But these iPads will not have the ability to print tickets (nor personalised timetables), nor will the former clerks carry a float to accept cash payment any more.

“Just imagine if you have limited mobility and arrive at Chippenham Station without a ticket. If it’s working, you might be able to use the machine. Or you have to guess which platform the ticket expert is on and how do you find him/her on the platform?

“For the majority of passengers, the new system will work – but until the fare system is simplified and there’s a better system put in place, it’s discriminating against the new, occasional and nervous passenger, and the disabled, and putting up a barrier to rail against the very customers that the industry needs – to grow its users, increase its income and reduce its demands on the taxpayer.

“At a time when we should be encouraging people to be more environmentally friendly, we are giving them an incentive to use private cars, and at a time when we should be encouraging people out of their home for their health, we are pushing them towards staying at home and social exclusion, with the knock-on cost on our health service.”

Public transport and disabilities campaigner David Redgewell said: “We don’t think this is in the interests of passengers, especially passengers with reduced mobility and in need of assistance.”

He said tickets such as half-price fares for wheelchair users were not available at ticket machines, which sold only a limited range.

  • Mum’s running challenge boosts 3G pitch fundraiser

A local mum has completed a 150km running challenge, raising more than £600 towards Melksham Town Football Club’s campaign for a new 3G pitch.

Dominika Paget ran 10km every other day throughout July, often in temperatures of up to 32C, to support the club’s efforts to purchase and install the pitch.

Her son, Harry, plays for the under-10s Typhoons. Dominika said poor winter conditions mean the team is often unable to play, highlighting the need for a dedicated 3G pitch.

She said, “At the moment Melksham Town are using the 3G pitch at Melksham Oak School but it is flooded all the time. Our children don’t play throughout the winter. You might get some spots in Chippenham or Devizes but it costs money to hire those as well. It just makes sense for Melksham Town to have one so we don’t have to go anywhere else.”

  • Short film shares Melksham charity’s emotive story

A Melksham-based charity has launched a new short film raising awareness of the vital support it provides to families with critically ill babies and children.

Evie’s Gift was founded in 2018 by Bryan Clover in memory of his daughter, Evie, who was born and raised in Melksham, and died from a brain tumour at just 13 years old.

The charity was established to ensure other families facing a child’s serious illness would receive practical support during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

The new film was created to tell the story behind the charity and demonstrate the impact its support has on families. It features Bryan alongside Harriet, a mum whose family received support from Evie’s Gift.

  • Primary school hosts celebration of culture

A vibrant culture festival was held at a local primary school recently to celebrate diversity and showcase the rich heritage of its pupils.

Children from Aloeric Primary School created posters showcasing their faiths, cultures, languages, heritage and family backgrounds.

The posters were displayed by continent, giving pupils the opportunity to explore and learn about countries from around the world. Equipped with their own passports, children travelled through the displays, collecting stamps as they discovered more about each nation.

  • Local group has fun with themed session

A singing group in Melksham recently held a ‘Ladies’ Day at the Races’ themed session, giving members the chance to have fun and wear smart clothes.

Members of the Singin’ Group attended their weekly meeting at the Riverside Centre, where they sang horse-related songs, including The Blaydon Races and Delaney’s Donkey. They also took part in a raffle, with prizes and rosettes awarded to the winners.

Any funds raised on the day went back into the group.

“Fun is our mantra,” said organiser Jeanette Nash. “We do various themes throughout the year. We try to vary them as much as possible. For St Andrew’s Day at the end of November, we will have a Scottish theme: tartan. We will wear kilts, sing Scottish songs and eat shortbread."

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis
Battito di un Poliziotto

(Il Vello d’Oro is Italian for The Golden Fleece, the same “Fleece Inn” and located in Shaw on Folly Lane).

Oh those days when we had bobbies on patrol and they knew everyone in town.

I’m not sure I pine for the 19th century, other than being a fly on the wall but those were the days that defined community. Nowadays we rarely know our local police by name and complaints tend to be discussed on Facebook rather than directly dealt with.

Here is just one report of a drunken incident that happened at closing time outside the Fleece.

  • Lions donate raffle funds to air ambulance

Fundraisers in Melk-sham have donated £1,500 to the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity.

The Melksham Lions Club presented a cheque to a member of the charity, Dave Martin, last month.

Funds were raised in the Lions’ annual Easter hamper raffle, where residents purchased raffle tickets at participating businesses to be in with the chance of winning a hamper of Easter treats and chocolate.

Director of the club, Paul Carter, said, “Thank you once again to all the sponsors, shops and of course you the public for taking part.”

  • Love Melksham – A resident’s love letters to her town

Eight years ago, two talented Melksham friends decided to take a leap of faith and create something lovely for Melksham.

Nicola and Sarah, a pair of enterprising artists, had met at the cosy gathering of crafters that started at the Littlebrook Centre in 2017. Inspired to showcase local arts and crafts, they approached the town council for help in using the Market Place for a monthly celebration of local creativity. With permissions and paperwork managed by the town council, they gathered together 11 other crafty people, and on a Saturday in 2019 - despite torrential rain, which meant the market was temporarily relocated into the town hall - the Melksham Makers’ Market was launched.

With Nicola’s beautiful, crocheted pieces and Sarah’s splendid sewing as staples of the market, this relatively small gathering of gazebos full of goodies has expanded over the years to become a regular monthly market of up to 25 stalls of knitted, painted, sculpted, welded, carved and baked goods.
