COMPLAINTS are growing from local residents after lengthy delays to the construction of a new roundabout linking Basil Drive and Spa Road in Melksham East.
Work started on 25th July last year to create the roundabout, but it has remained fenced off, attracting complaints from residents over the lack of progress over the year.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said the project has been delayed, “when an unknown BT Openreach fibre-optic cable apparatus was discovered.”
One resident, who has complained about the ‘mess’ and size of the site said, “It appears that there’s been a rather big no doubt, very costly embarrassing mistake, being that it’s several feet higher than Spa Road and work stopped midway through months and months ago, now leaving an overgrown, coned fenced off wasteland; it looks a complete mess. Who is taking responsibility for this one I wonder?”
Another resident added, “I drive past the site each day on my commute to work; it’s ridiculous that work started a whole year ago now, and there has been very little progress.”
Leader of Wiltshire Council cllr Richard Clewer, said, “We are in discussions with the developer responsible for the works, and BT, to resolve this.
“There is also damage to the top of an existing brick arch culvert, and we are in discussion with the developer to repair this. The work to repair and strengthen the culvert should be completed within the same time frame needed to address the BT cable diversions.”
