FINAL preparations for Melksham Comic Con are taking place, with this year’s event expected to be bigger and better than ever.
This year’s two-day event, which is now in its fifth year, will be based in three locations, with the main convention held in Melksham Assembly Hall and other attractions at the Kings Arm and Town Hall.
Organiser and owner of local shop Komix!, Hayley Spencer said, “Highlights this year include some brilliant hands-on workshops on creating your own superheroes and getting started in drawing Manga. Seats are very limited as they’ll be ‘draw along’ style sessions.
“We also have Live Body Painting on the Main Stage on Sunday, the now famous Comic-Con Pictionary and new for this year’s Cosplay Competition, we have four categories, and a whopping twelve trophies up for grabs!
“Some of our fantastic guests from previous years will be returning, who you can meet, view and buy their work and speak to directly. Guests like Sonia Leong, Mike Collins, Lee Townsend and Dylan Teague are big supporters of Melksham Comic-Con, and we love having them!
“We also have new guests Jack Lawrence, illustrator for Skylanders comics, and Verity Glass, who has recently been working on covers for the new Doctor Who comics from Titan Publishing.
“New for this year also is the family category for our Cosplay Competition. If you’re a family that love dressing up, you can enter as a family group on Saturday and bag yourself some great prizes. Children, adults and group categories are also still running, so be sure to get your costumes perfected.
“If you’ve not been to Comic Con before, you can expect super talented artists and creators, incredible books that are fun, adventurous and inspirational, free face painting, balloon sculptures, discussion panels, a Tabletop Gaming Room, details on the Graphic Novel Book Club run by KomiX, fantastic merchandise stalls and so much more!
“We are entirely volunteer-run and self-funded and we do it out of passion for the comic book industry. We are a group of friends and family – about 30 of us – who are all fans ourselves, so we design Melksham Comic-Con to be the convention that we would want to go to if we weren’t organising it! We attend other conventions across the country, and learn from each one – what would we improve? What do we like? Can we do it ourselves? It turns out, we can!”
