SPENCER Bowls Club hosted the annual club competition for the Mary Mitchell trophy last month – in memory of Mary who was a founder member of the ladies bowls club at Spencer.
For the club, Mick Over reports, “What a beautiful day we had to play bowls – some would say too hot. What a change from the beginning of the season, playing in double layers of clothing and waterproofs in the rain and cold. It’s certainly right that you can’t please everyone all the time with our weather. All the ladies were treated to the sight of more men playing in shorts than you will normally see on a bowls green.
“For most of the spectators it could not have been better, a comfortable chair in the shade with a cold drink just watching bowls.
“The morning started promptly at 10am with all six rinks starting the first round of three games each consisting of seven ends. It was a treat to see all the new players playing, in what was for most of them their first game of singles.
“Play went on until 1pm when the girls laid on a lovely buffet lunch for all the players and spectators. A cold pint was most welcome in the sunshine or for some, a welcome cup of tea. Play resumed at 2pm with the winners of the morning three match triples playing a knock-out round in the afternoon, another three games of seven ends.
“The final was a very close-fought game over seven ends between Dave Laws and Steve Gedge, with Steve winning on a very well placed wick on the last end, to beat Dave by one shot.
“The winner, Steve Gedge, was presented with the Mary Mitchell cup by Mary’s husband Patrick, who has only given up bowling in the last few years due to ill health.
“Once again a great day was enjoyed by everyone and it is with many thanks to the ladies of the bowls club for putting such a great spread and last but not least, don’t forget Bernie and Carol Davies for getting up early and laying all the kit out.”
