Melksham hockey star, Liam Sanford, has returned with a bronze medal from the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast, Australia.
Liam helped England beat India 2-1 to clinch the men’s hockey Commonwealth Bronze.
Liam said, “This is an incredible end to these amazing Commonwealth Games, my first of hopefully many more to come, beating India 2-1 to win the bronze medal. I am now focused on the build-up cycle to the Tokyo Olympics in Japan in 2020, the upcoming Hockey World Cup in India, and the European Championships.”
When he was part of the Junior U21 GB and England teams, Liam was recognised in Melksham for his achievements, receiving a Mayor’s Civic Award in March 2017. Since then, he won his first cap for England at the age of 20 and has represented England and GB in South Africa, Malaysia, Holland and India.
Still only 22, Liam remains the youngest team member for Team GB and England.
Liam also continues to serve in the Royal Air Force and was raised to ‘elite athlete status’ upon selection to the Senior GB and England teams.
