Another technology upgrade for River Mead

RIVER Mead School has received another donation of technology equipment from Asda.

The school said, “We had another delivery today of device bundles, so have another group of children extremely happy to receive them and would like to say a big thank you to Asda.”

The laptop ‘bundles’ included laptops, headphones, dongles and data.

  • Chocolate bingo to support dementia charity A chocolate bingo event is being held in Melksham to raise funds for a dementia support charity. Melksham Baptist Church in Old Broughton Road will transform into a lively bingo hall on Saturday 11th July, in aid of Beyond Dementia, which helps people with dementia and their families.   • School plan aims to cut traffic speeds and congestion A primary school is seeking a lower speed limit and measures to reduce congestion on roads around the school. Shaw CE Primary School has been consulting staff, governors, parents and local residents as it develops a new travel plan aimed at improving safety around the school. A meeting was held recently to discuss the issues. School governor Sue Evans said, “The aim is to reduce congestion around the school and reduce speed limits. “Locally, most of the schools have a 20mph limit outside but ours doesn’t. We have got an awful lot of children that walk from George Ward Gardens, 51 this year. The road is 40mph and it is too fast." Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Man convicted over Melksham hammer attack A man who repeatedly struck his victim to the head with a hammer in Melksham town centre has been found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent. Nathan Scholey, 32, of no fixed abode, was also found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon when he appeared before Winchester Crown Court on Thursday 18th June. The court heard how on the evening of Friday 17th October, Scholey launched his attack on a man in his 40s, following a brief verbal altercation in Melksham High Street. Read more on our website.   • Makers’ Market brings local traders back to Melksham The Melksham Makers’ Market will return this month on Saturday 27th June bringing together local makers and creatives. What began with just 12 stalls now sees more than 20 local traders gather in the Market Place, bringing everything from handmade gifts and artwork to flowers, skincare, cakes, jewellery, coffee and treats for dogs. The Melksham Makers’ Market was started by Nicola Coleman from The Secret Crocheter and Sarah Hillman from Florrie & Jean as a way of giving local makers and creatives somewhere affordable and welcoming to showcase what they do.   • Live music returns to Market Place An evening of free entertainment is returning to the Market Place this month with the next Friday Light Live event. The event on Friday 26th June from 6pm to 7pm will feature David Toya, a jazz and soul vocalist. Audiences can expect an engaging performance of swing and jazz classics alongside a few surprises. Friday Light Live is a new series of free, early evening events taking place on the last Friday of each month throughout the summer, organised by Melksham Town Council. It aims to bring residents and visitors into the town centre, support local performers and encourage people to explore Melksham’s cafés, pubs and businesses as part of a vibrant evening economy.   • Free fruit and veg scheme launched for local schools A local supermarket is providing free fruit and vegetables to schools in Melksham as part of a campaign promoting healthy eating among children. Tesco Express in Bowerhill donated the first box of fresh produce to Bowerhill Primary School recently. Under the scheme, a different local school will receive a delivery each month. The initiative aims to encourage more children to eat fruit and vegetables and increase awareness of healthy food choices. Tesco aims to provide fruit and vegetables to one million children across the country between 2026 and 2029. Headteacher Chris Light said, “By Tesco dropping off foods like pineapples and different grape varieties, it increases the children’s awareness of what different foods taste like but also where they come from and different climates.   • Plan for car-buying office in Asda car park A car-buying office could be installed in Melksham’s Asda car park after plans were submitted to Wiltshire Council. Vehicle-buying service We Buy Any Car Ltd has submitted a change of use planning application proposing the installation of a standalone office building. The building would occupy two parking spaces if approved. The application says the car park currently has 245 spaces and would retain 243 if the office is erected.   • Canal trust marks 75th anniversary with Semington stop A commemorative narrowboat journey marking the 75th anniversary of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust stopped in Semington this week. Members of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust passed through Semington Junction on Monday 15th June aboard the narrowboat Hannah as part of a journey from Bristol to Reading celebrating the trust’s milestone anniversary. The crew were welcomed with tea, cake and a friendly handshake by volunteers from the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. Semington Junction holds an important place in the county’s industrial heritage. It marks the meeting point between the Kennet & Avon Canal, completed in 1810 to link London with Bristol, and the former Wilts & Berks Canal, which once connected the Kennet & Avon at Semington to the River Thames at Abingdon.   • Blue Pool site works undertaken before planning approval Melksham Town Council carried out structural works at the Blue Pool site before obtaining planning permission for the project. The council was preparing to temporarily relocate its amenities team to the former swimming pool site and commissioned preparatory work. Works at the site included the removal of a wall to install gates, the installation of electric vehicle charging points for council vehicles and the placement of two shipping containers. After Melksham News enquired whether planning permission had been granted, Melksham News understands that the council subsequently contacted Wiltshire Council to clarify whether permission was required.
