MEMBERS of the Atworth History Group enjoyed a walk from St Michael’s Church in the village to the Speke monument near Wadswick on the 30th April.
The monument marks the place where the famous English explorer, John Hanning Speke lost his life in a tragic accident while out shooting with his cousin George Fuller. Speke made three exploratory expeditions to Africa and is credited with discovering the source of the River Nile. In perfect conditions, the walk to the Speke monument was enjoyed by all and the club would like to thank Jim Gooding for arranging and leading it.
In May the Atworth History Group enjoyed an excellent talk given by Kenneth Spencer who talked about the development of the computer and a couple of his heroes, particularly Alan Turing who built one of the first computers, which was used during the Second World War to find settings for the German Enigma machine that enabled the team at Bletchley Park to crack coded messages.
On Monday 6th June the group will welcome Ruby Vitorino Moody who will be giving a talk to the history group about highwaymen.
We meet on the first Monday of the month (unless there’s a bank holiday – as there is this month, in which case it’ll be the second Monday) in Atworth Village Hall at 7:30pm.
Visitors are very welcome at the modest cost of £5 for the evening, or you may wish to join for an annual subscription of £15.
