The first meeting of the new year for Atworth WI was on Monday 21st of January.
It was very well attended. It is a special year this year as it is the centenary of Wiltshire Federation. Members were told of the special events planned to mark the centenary and were invited to sign up to attend.
We were shown the beautifully embroidered panel that Lesley Adam had made featuring our village, which will be part of the centenary wall hanging.
Several of the committee had attended a meeting in Devizes that afternoon where several speakers were giving us more information about the resolutions on the short list sent to members. Every member has the chance to vote for the one they think would be worthy of a WI campaign. The winning resolution would then be voted on at the AGM of the National Federation.
Several groups are going to live screenings of operas, ballets and a live musical in the next few weeks.
This month’s competition was My Favourite Hat.There were a lot of entries and the winner was Lesley Braund with the hat her mother wore at Lesley’s wedding in 1968.
We then had a fascinating and very well illustrated talk about Viv Penney’s recent trip to Japan. We learned a lot about their culture, food and transport and the absence of litter.
The speaker at our next meeting on Monday February 18th is Patsy Floyd with an illustrated talk on ‘Gardening at Great Chalfield.’
