A MUCH celebrated author of teenage fiction, who has sold over one million copies of her best-selling series, is to formally open a new ‘Discovery Centre’ at Melksham Oak.
Author Cathy Hopkins, best known for her teenage fiction ‘Mates Dates’ series will visit Melksham on Friday 9th May to open the school’s Discovery Centre.
The centre has been open at Melksham Oak for a period of time already but Cathy is to formally open the centre which is also to have extended opening hours, allowing pupils to use it before and after school.
The discovery centre is described by the school as, “a spacious, vibrant, welcoming part of the school which is always a hive of activity. Comprising of upper and lower floors which is full of big sofas and bean bags, we hold approximately 10,000 books which include reference, non-fiction and fiction. Our fiction books, which include the majority of those that can be found in the national top 20 reading lists, cover everything from adventure, humour, teen reads to horror. This has had a massive impact on literacy across the school, with loan statistics raising to almost 1,000 books a month.”
Cathy will also be delivering a talk about writing fiction and answering questions. There will also be an opportunity to buy one of her books and have it signed by the author.
