AVON Bowls Club hosted this year’s Mid Wilts Triples League Gala Day, following their win last year.
The competition took place on Sunday 24th September and with Avon being captained by Tom Little. “Seven rinks were used on an unseasonably warm September afternoon,” says a member of the club, Pat Cook. “There was an eagerly awaited game between the winners of the Premier Division of the Mid Wilts Triples League, Spencer Moulton from Bradford-on-Avon, against Paul Mackie of Calne’s chairman’s team, which was won by Spencer Moulton, 28 shots to 12.
“The Wilson Trophy was another exciting game between North Wilts and Spencer Melksham; it was a close game throughout but won by North Wilts 20 shots to 13.
“Before the presentation of prizes, a raffle was held; our thanks to all who donated and supported.
“Following our centenary in 2022, we celebrate another successful year with our under 25s Alfie Holland, Georgina Newman, Jack Crowder and Josh Hall all achieving the ambition of playing in the National Championships at Royal Lemington Spa where they represented Avon and Wiltshire.
“Our Avon Roadrunners were second in the Mid Wilts Triples League and our other team the Speedsters were third.
“After a nail-biting season in the 4 rink league, the last game was between three teams – Amesbury, Spencer Melksham and Avon. Sadly we came third but still enjoyed ourselves.
“Although our outdoor season is over for another year, during the winter we have regular events with the first being a coffee morning on Friday 27th October, 9.30am to 11.30am, at the club house at Melksham Campus – turn right at the bottom of the drive – with breakfast baps and perhaps a cake or two.
“4th November at 3pm, will see our Presentation Day for winners of club competitions. More upcoming events can be found on our Facebook page or if you would like to become a member, we offer a warm welcome; please contact by email at abc-secretary@hotmail.co.uk.
“Meanwhile, if you are thinking of trying bowls, why not give it a go? Watch for details of our 2024 season beginning around the end of April, with possibly an Open Day at which you can do just that! Give it a go! You are assured of a very warm welcome. And Seidal could be just the beginning!”
DURING the summer months, the Avon Bowls Club Ladies’ Seidel team competed against other teams in the North and South of the county, finishing as runners-up on the Gala Day on 12th September.
The event was hosted by Devizes with the top teams, Box Pink and Devizes Red, playing the final; Box being the overall winners.
“Seidal, similar to the men’s Tea & Biscuits competition, was formed some years ago by a group of Wiltshire lady bowlers,” says a spokesperson for the club. “No whopping prizes, just the glory and a chance to spend time with fellow bowlers, followed by hot tea, sandwiches and cakes which made up for awful weather!
“Some clubs submit two teams to the competition, while others, including Avon provide one. Despite Avon’s poor start to the season, we were delighted to finish as runners-up in the South League, while North Wilts Poppies were runners-up in the North.”
