A FAMILY moored on their canal boat on the Kennet & Avon Canal in Bowerhill are helping to keep the area tidy whilst in lockdown.
Brothers, Seb and Eddie Rayment – aged 11 and 7 respectively – have been carrying out frequent litter picks along the canal path and have built a “dog mess clear up station” for the general public to use.
“There has been a wonderful influx of walkers due to lockdown, but with it brings an increase in rubbish and mess,” explained Seb and Eddie’s mother, Bonnie Rayment.
“There is a mis-conception by some local people that the boater community are causing the litter. However, my boys have been doing frequent litter picking whenever we have to go to the bins at the Barge Inn and they have also created a dog mess clear up station for the general public to use.”
The Rayment family would normally travel and move every two weeks – but as Covid restrictions only allow for essential travel on the canal network, the family will remain moored in Bowerhill for the remainder of the national lockdown.
And the Rayment youngsters plan to continue their litter picking efforts to “give back” to the community, encouraging visitors to the area to follow their lead.
“We feel so lucky to have the wonderful community garden to explore during lockdown as we have two children,” said Bonnie.
