THE Bowerhill Barkers has taken another step closer its fundraising target, collecting £600 on Remembrance Sunday at Leekes of Melksham.
The local fundraising group has now raised a total of £15,200 since May 2018. The group is aiming to raise £55,000 – the lifetime cost of a guide dog – to enable them to name and sponsor a guide dog.
On behalf of the group, Caroline Fielding said, “It felt particularly poignant to be collecting for Guide Dogs on such a significant date and thinking of all the brave souls at home and abroad who have fought for our liberty.
“During the two-minute silence, which was extremely well introduced by the store manager, I focussed on thinking about the number of soldiers who lost their sight during World War One due to exposure to mustard gas. It was as a direct result of this that the first guide dogs were formally trained using German Shepherds.”
The group is also appealing for volunteers to help with collections in the run up to Christmas.
Caroline said, “For the collection in Leekes, Bowerhill Barkers was joined by new member Carolann and her lovely guide dog Luna. We have a few more collections in the lead up to Christmas and would like to encourage anyone else who has been thinking of volunteering and have a couple of hours to spare to help to contact either Hazel on 07725 519051 or myself (Caroline) on 07752 515479.”
