BOWERHILL’S new pavilion was opened at the sports field last Saturday, after years of campaigning to keep the space for recreation.

The pavilion was officially opened by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Wiltshire, Sarah Troughton, on Saturday 19th September.

Chair of Melksham Without Parish Council, Richard Wood said, “It was terrific to be able to open the pavilion at last; getting it built has been a contribution of hard work from so many people, stretching back around 18 years.

“Herman Miller’s involvement meant we had a great architect, and the new building is a big improvement, which we’re very proud of.  The field is already heavily used so it’s important that we can offer people good facilities. The previous changing rooms were really not fit for purpose; this was something that needed to be done.

“As well as use by sports clubs, the building will have a lot of potential for other community use, and it’s up to us to make the most of it. It was great to have the Lord Lieutenant there to open it – she came in 2012 to designate the field as a Field in Trust and is a very cheerful and charming woman.”

The new pavilion beside Westinghouse Way on the industrial estate, was built by Herman Miller to replace the old building they demolished to make way for a connecting road to their new headquarters.

The pavilion has four new changing rooms and a kitchen and lounge area, which will be available for use by local community groups, such as Young Melksham, who are hoping to reopen the Bowerhill Youth Club on the site.

Its construction is the latest chapter in a project to ensure the land can continue to be used for public recreation. In 2010 Melksham Without Parish Council took ownership of the sports field from Wiltshire Council, and it has since been permanently protected by the National Playing Fields Association.

  • Resident raises accessibility concerns over incomplete footpath

A resident is calling for the next section of the new footpath, which would link the completed path from Melksham East to Melksham Oak Community School with A365 Bath Road, to be finished following accessibility concerns.

Chris Davis, a wheelchair user, said he was frustrated that the path installed in July by Wiltshire Council after an eight-year delay does not yet connect to A365 Bath Road, and the unfinished section is not suitable for wheelchair users.

“I am a bit cross,” said Chris. “The pathway that took eight years to complete was never actually completed. I live up on Bowerhill on Wellington Drive. As a wheelchair user, I thought, ‘great, I will be able to go through the newly adapted entrance, onto the tarmac, up to the rugby club and back’ but no. The pathway that runs from Eastern Way runs down to Woolmore Farm but it stops at the farm.”

A teenager has been arrested following a late-night assault in Melksham’s town centre that left a man injured after being attacked with a hammer.

Police say the incident happened shortly before midnight on Friday 17th October, when the victim encountered two masked males dressed in black riding bicycles before being struck with a hammer.

Wiltshire Police said, “We have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been bailed while enquiries continue. One of the suspects remains outstanding.”

  • Local branch of Your Party launches

The local branch of a new left-wing political party launched on Saturday 27th September, with more than 50 people attending its first meeting in Frome.

Your Party, co-led by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, was launched in July. It aims to provide an alternative to the ‘status quo’ and to ‘ensure a fair society for all.’

Organisers say they were very pleased with the turnout for the first meeting of the Frome and West Wiltshire branch. Spokesperson Pete Mellen said, “It was truly heartwarming to see so many people come forward to volunteer to help with pushing the movement forward,” despite the recent spat between Jeremy and Zarah.

  • Concerns raised over ‘hazardous’ pavements across local estate

Residents have raised concerns about the state of the pavements across the housing estate near Forest and Sandridge Primary School, with those immediately adjacent to the school described as especially hazardous.

Residents report there are large cracks in the pavements running throughout the estate, which they believe pose a safety risk, particularly to children going to and from school.

One resident said, “I’ve seen children trip over the cracks. The cracks are huge so wheels from scooters and bikes could easily get stuck. It’s a real hazard for children who use these paths every day, but the problem affects the whole estate, not just the areas near the school.”

Another resident added, “The paths are used daily by children travelling to and from school on bikes and scooters. The state of the pavements is appalling and they have been like this for a long time.”

  • Melksham girl’s charity fundraiser supports sister with rare condition

A Melksham girl has raised £1,200 for charity in support of her sister, who was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition shortly after birth.

Seven-year-old Harper wanted to raise awareness and vital funds to help support her sister Imogen, who has Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare disorder that affects how the body processes protein.

Harper has been swimming with Puddle Ducks at Stonar School since the age of three and decided to use her passion for swimming to make a difference.

Working closely with the Puddle Ducks team, she helped create a fun, sponsored lesson plan that encouraged her fellow swimmers to join in. The sessions took place during the final week of term and included challenges and activities that let the children to showcase their skills, all while raising vital funds for the National Society for Phenylketonuria (NSPKU).

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

Beltane: Dissenters and Defectors (part 2)

Beltane was the name of the agricultural school which followed the Montessori method of teaching children, emphasising a hands-on approach to learning. Classes were of mixed gender and age, activities were self-directed, and learning was done by guidance rather than instruction.

In 1939, when the school was brought to Shaw Hill House, you can imagine the founders, teachers and students were quite progressive and liberal; bohemian, in fact, having a way of life away from society’s conventional norms and expectations.

The timing of the opening also brought those escaping the war, either through defection or dissent. Kindertransport saved the lives of Jewish children who arrived as students, and artists, mathematicians and scientists who were conscientious objectors became teachers.

  • Over £2,000 raised to mark 85 years since Battle of Britain

The Melksham branch of the Royal Air Force Association has raised over £2,000 for Battle of Britain Week, commemorating 85 years since Britain was saved from German invasion.

The Battle of Britain, fought in 1940, was a crucial conflict in which the RAF defended the UK from large-scale attacks by the German Luftwaffe, preventing a potential invasion.

Collections at community events and local supermarkets contributed to the total, including £158 at the recent Melksham Food and River Festival, £1,720 at RAFA tables in Asda and Lidl, and £205 at a table run by members of No 2385 Melksham Air Training Corps in the town centre.

Branch vice-chairman and Wings Appeal Officer Trevor Paterson said, “The money raised is used to support the welfare needs of active and retired members of the Royal Air Force, both locally and across the country.”
