Bowerhill Scout Group raises £437 for RUH

A cheque for £437.92 was recently presented to the Melksham R.U.H Cancer Care Fundraising Group by the Beavers,  Cubs and Scouts of Bowerhill Scout Group.
This was from monies raised by the group’s fundraising bag packing events. Last year, the Scout group gave donations from part of their fund raising to Dorothy House.

  • Melksham Choral Society celebrates 80 years of singing A Melksham choir which was formed before the Second World War is celebrating 80 years of bringing choral music to the community. Melksham Choral Society currently has around 40 members and meets each week at the Rachel Fowler Centre. The society was formed shortly before the Second World War but paused during the conflict before restarting in the 1950s. In 1953, the society welcomed conductor Jean Horsfall, who was able to lead the choir alongside an accompanying orchestra for the first time. During this period, the choir regularly took part in the Devizes Music Festival, often coming away with first prize. In the 1970s, the society was twinned with a French choir in Avon, leading to two trips to France for concerts and reciprocal visits to Melksham. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio
  • Villagers celebrate 67th annual fete A local village came together for its 67th summer fete last month, welcoming families, neighbours and visitors for a day of fun and games. Seend Village Fete organisers said this year’s event was the biggest yet, with classic cars, live music and a range of activities for all ages. Children enjoyed Kids’ Corner, hosted by Seend School, alongside Wild Edge Adventure, Roc and Box Coffee, Seend Playgroup, Kelly’s Petting Farm and Super Pirates. Two new attractions, a Story Tent and Craft Tent, were also introduced, while the Artisan Avenue showcased local makers. Music came from Fantasy Radio, Melksham Ukulele Band and Frome-based Bloom Duo.   • Melksham gears up for packed Sham Jam Festival Melksham
  • Stand unveiled at Melksham Town FC in memory of club stalwart Melksham Town Football Club has renamed one of its stands in memory of club stalwart Mick Perrin who died earlier this year. The club officially unveiled the Mick Perrin Stand in a special ceremony on Saturday 29th August which would have been Mick’s 80th birthday. The club said, “We were delighted to welcome the Perrin family to the Meads Of Melksham Community Football Stadium yesterday. The Mick Perrin Stand will continue to extend Mick’s legacy at the club he held so dear and close to his heart.” Mick died in February following more than six decades of service to Melksham Town as a player, secretary, chairman and joint president.   • Nightclub reunion to celebrate Wiltshire’s clubbing history A reunion celebrating three of Wiltshire’s legendary nightclubs from the 1980s and 1990s will take place in Westbury this month. The Reflections, Oscars & Diggers Reunion will be held on Saturday 19th September at the former Reflections nightclub, now operating as Venom. The event will bring together former clubgoers and DJs of Reflections in Westbury, Oscars at Longleat near Warminster and Goldiggers in Chippenham. Organiser Chris Freeman said the reunion had been inspired by conversations with former clubgoers and DJs, with Reflections now the only one of the three venues still operating. “We felt the time was right to bring everyone together and celebrate the memories of these three iconic venues,” he said. “Don’t miss this chance to be a part of Wiltshire clubbing history!   • Women’s community group celebrates first anniversary A local group bringing women together in a relaxed, supportive environment is celebrating its first anniversary this month. The Sundaze Club launched in September last year, with local women Becky and Kadie organising monthly meet-ups and activities for women in their 20s and 30s Since launching, the group has held a variety of events including brunches, bingo, exercise classes, days out and walks. Becky said, “It has flown by so quickly and I can’t believe just how much we’ve done in the year. We have tried to do lots of different events. Every last Sunday of the month we leave it open for going to bingo at Spoons in town. That can be a casual event that people can go to if they fancy it. “Once a month, we plan a fixed event where it’ll be something like a dog walk or a spa day.   • Melksham Oak to hold open evening for prospective students Melksham Oak Community School is inviting prospective students and their parents and carers to its annual Open Evening on Wednesday 16th September. The event will give families an opportunity to look around the school, meet staff and students and learn more about the opportunities available to pupils. Hannah Ornov, from Melksham Oak Community School, said, “Choosing the right secondary school is an important decision, and our Open Evening provides an excellent opportunity to experience life at Melksham Oak for yourself. “Visitors will be able to explore our facilities, meet members of staff and students, and find out more about the exciting opportunities, high expectations and supportive community that make our school such a special place to learn and grow.   • Water safety equipment installed along river New water safety equipment has been installed along the River Avon in Melksham to help people respond to emergencies in the water. Three rescue containers containing throwlines and other lifesaving equipment have been installed at locations along the river, including King George V Park. The measures follow concerns raised last summer after the Adventure Centre helped rescue children who had got into difficulty in the river. The centre reported three near-miss incidents involving children playing in the water last year. The equipment, installed by Melksham Town Council, was delivered following collaboration with several partners, including Wiltshire Search and Rescue and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, which provided specialist advice on the most appropriate equipment for the location.
