Scouts from Bowerhill completed a gruelling 12-hour hiking challenge recently, developing their map reading and navigation skills.
Two teams from 1st Bowerhill Scouts completed the TrekQuinox Challenge in Bath, starting at Cleeve Hill Campsite at 6pm on Saturday 21st March and finishing at 6pm on Sunday 22nd March.
The challenge sees teams attempt to hike 20 miles in 12 hours before the sun comes up. One of the teams completed 17 miles, with the other team hiking 18 miles.
1st Bowerhill scout leader Neal Brookes said, “The initial thing is making sure they are aware of what they are actually carrying on a hike and what they would need against what they don’t actually need. They also learn orienteering skills, the old-style map reading and using a compass and maps.
“We have seven checkpoints along the way and once you reach checkpoint one, you automatically qualify for a TrekQuinox badge and a woggle, it’s a little incentive for the scouts.
“It is always a great night with scouts meeting new scout friends who share common interests. We are all extremely proud of our scouts for their personal achievement.”
