The men of Broughton Gifford bowlers were once again in MWTL action, at home to Chippenham Town, on a very pleasant evening on Thursday 23rd May.
The club reports, “Trevor Gardner was drafted in as a last minute replacement, due to a late withdrawal, and played a significant part on skip Ray Thomas’ rink, which won 27-8. The team was also buoyed by the return of Paul Stocker for his first game of the season. He used his considerable knowledge and experience to play a key role as number two in aiding lead Garth Topp and skip Richard Mizen’s rink to a 25-20 victory. Match result BG 10 Chippenham Town 4.
“After a somewhat shaky start following promotion, Broughton have acquitted themselves well to the rigours of Division 2. Three successive wins have moved the team up to second place in the table.
“Broughton ladies have enjoyed the best of times recently. That said, the home side got off to a slow start against Calne Bees in their Nor-West League game on 21st May. The BG’s were eleven shots down after six ends across the two rinks. After twelve ends, the deficit was reduced to seven shots and then the home side produced a strong late performance, narrowing the gap and then snatching victory in dramatic style, by scoring two shots on the last end to win 38-37. Match result BG 4 Calne 2.
“The first round of the ladies County Pairs Competition saw the two BG entries drawn against Amesbury at home and away at Wilton. It was a great day for BG as both teams won their games by five and six shots respectively. It was BG’s turn to host the annual mixed friendly fixture against Winsley, which was played on the last Saturday of May. It was a lovely sunny afternoon with a warm, light breeze. The green had a nice pace about it, and the lines arcing into the head were true and easily found. These were ideal conditions for bowling, which enabled all taking part to produce a good standard of play. The game ended with another 2-2 rink draw, the third of the season.
