NEWLY-crowned MWL DIV 111 champions Warminster visited the Broughton green on the 31st August for the last league game of the season, having suffered just one defeat in nineteen games.
The home team went into the game with the knowledge that a good result could earn the coveted second promotion place, but also aware that results from the other games that evening would also be a factor in the final reckoning.
Play commenced on time in bright evening sunshine. The visitors adapted quickly to the pace of the green which bowled well. Broughton also settled in and with both teams playing to form, some good heads developed as the early ends progressed. After six ends the rinks were level at two each, although Broughton were just ahead by two shots. The lead stretched to thirteen shots at twelve ends with the rinks remaining at two each. In the final third of the game the champions could only claw back the deficit by two shots and were therefore subjected to only their second defeat of the season.
Result: Broughton 10 Warminster 4. Teams and scores: K Darby, P Rigby & V Davis 22-6; R Mizen, K Holmes & S Hockings 13-19; G Whitfield, M Davies & J Stewart 18-12; R Warburton, P Stocker & H Arlett 13-18.
This fine result was not quite enough to secure promotion, but congratulations to captain Steve Hockings and his team on a very good season of skilful bowls and good sportsmanship.
