A Melksham transport charity fundraising for a new bus is nearing its £50,000 target, thanks to donations from several local groups.
Melksham Area Community Transport has supported the local community for 30 years, helping older residents get to the shops, children travel to school and community groups attend activities.
The charity began fundraising in July and is now looking for a suitable vehicle. Donations from Mason’s Mark Benevolent Fund, Melksham Lions Club, Friends of Melksham Hospital and Community, The Melksham Almshouses Charity and others have helped it get closer to its target.
“We still need to raise a few more thousand pounds, to allow us to purchase the best available bus to suit the demands which will be made on it for many years,” said John Ruderman from the transport group. “If anybody, any business or other charity, feel able to make donations please do get in touch.”
The charity has also recently seen its chairman, David Hogg, retire after 10 years in the role. He is being replaced by Sarah Stead.
“Thanks to David for his hard work and commitment over the last 10 years and welcome Sarah,” said John.
Melksham Area Community Transport has one more day trip planned for this year, to Salisbury on Saturday 14th November.
Bookings can be made at the Tourist Information Centre.
The charity can be contacted through the Tourist Information Office on 01225 707424 or by visiting the centre on Church Street.
