There was fun, friendship and plenty to eat and drink for 70 local children, ranging from ages three to 12, at the holiday club organised by the churches of Atworth, Shaw and Whitley from 4th – 7th August.
One of the organisers Dianne Briggs said, “Special thanks to Shaw School for allowing us to use their grounds and wonderful new hall and kitchen.
“During the mornings the children could either join in activities organised by Sportzcoach or choose from many indoor activities including drawing, flower making and lego. There were many helpers which made it possible for the children to be supervised whatever they chose to do, while other volunteers supplied drinks, biscuits and fruit at regular intervals.
“Each day lunch was served to the children and included a healthy choice of sandwiches, vegetables, sausages, sausage rolls, fruit and cake. After the morning’s exertions appetites were obviously large and the food was swiftly devoured!
“Each afternoon various craft activities were organised for the children. On the first day a competition was held to design a logo to be used for this and future holiday clubs. The winning design, by Chloe Ladner-Poole, appeared on the certificates that each child was presented with at the end of the week.
“Following the theme of the Commonwealth Games the children made ‘stained glass’ flags which were displayed on the windows in the hall and their own version of the Queen’s baton.
“A huge thanks to the large number of people who gave up their time and helped make the holiday club possible, and to Waitrose, Sainsburys and ASDA for the vouchers they gave to help towards the cost of the food.
“The children (and their parents) obviously thought the week was worthwhile as many have already asked about booking for next year! We were pleased to be able to tell them that we certainly do hope to run the holiday club in 2015.
