RESIDENTS have been collecting their free saplings from Melksham Town Council that are being given away as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.
The initiative was created to celebrate the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June last year. It has now been extended in memory of her Majesty, to the end of the planting season in Spring this year.
Development officer at the Melksham Town Council Miriam Zaccarelli said, “The national scheme is extended which simply means than any trees planted during this time can count towards the Queen’s Green Canopy; there is a website where people can register their trees as part of the national project.
“I understand that trees can be sourced from anywhere to be part of the scheme. It doesn’t have to come through a town council, so if anyone wants to plant a tree in memory of the Queen, they can source one and plant it, and register it here: https://queensgreencanopy.org/map-education-hub/qgc-map/#/
“As part of the scheme, Melksham Town Council have arranged for saplings to be given to residents to plant in their gardens, and people signed up for a tree as part of the Jubilee celebrations in June and at ClimateFest in October this year.
“Melksham Town Council are not taking any more orders for trees now, but may consider running the scheme again next autumn.”
