Residents are being encouraged to share their views on a proposed ‘Welcome to Forest’ sign planned for the Forest area of Melksham.
This project is being developed in partnership between Melksham Town Council, River Mead Primary School and Community Conversations residents’ panel.
The aim is to create a welcoming and locally distinctive landmark that reflects pride in the Forest community.
The proposed location is the two grass verges at the start of Forest Road, where it meets Sandridge Road, on land owned by Wiltshire Council. Permission has been granted in principle for the sign to be installed, with Melksham Town Council responsible for maintenance and insurance.
Community Conversations Lead Bridie Hanraads said, “This is the route that many local children walk from home to school and therefore would be a source of pride for the children and their families, who are involved in the project.
“We understand there may be concerns about whether this location accurately reflects the boundary of Forest. Over the past year, a number of alternative sites across Forest have been explored; however, none have proved suitable or viable due to land ownership, permissions, or practical constraints. As a result, this location is currently the only feasible option identified.
“No final decision has been made at this stage and the community’s feedback is a key part of shaping whether and how the project moves forward.”
Residents can share their views by 30th July. Depending on feedback, there may also be an opportunity to attend a local meeting or drop-in session, details of which would be shared separately.
Once the consultation period has ended, all feedback will be considered before any decisions are taken. If the project proceeds, there will be further opportunities for community involvement, including input into the design of the signage.
Residents can share their views, including comments on the proposed location, visual impact, placement or suggestions for the project, by contacting towncouncil@melksham-tc.gov.uk, calling 01225 704 187 or writing to Melksham Town Council, Town Hall, Market Place, Melksham SN12 6ES.
