Building has begun to renovate one of Melksham’s oldest buildings in Canon Square into accommodation as well as flexible working space for local charities and the growing children and youth’s church at St Michael’s Church.
Stonemasonry and internal asbestos removal work started at the end of September marking the beginning of phase 1 of the church’s Building to Serve project.
The second phase of the project will involve renovations to the historic church building, including the installation of a kitchen and toilet, as well as the removal of the pews to make it more accessible for community events such as concerts and toddler groups.
The church community has been working hard to raise funds towards their target of over £200,000 for phase 1, through grants, donations and various fundraising events.
The church’s rector, Charlie Thomson, swapped his motorcycle for a push bike at the end of September, cycling a 65-mile round trip from St. Michael’s Church to Salisbury Cathedral, raising almost £2,000 in sponsorship.
Rev Charlie Thomson said, “The trip was part of the national Ride and Stride event, with half the money going to the church for our building project, and the other half going to the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, which makes grants to churches like ours.
“This was the furthest I had ever cycled, but it was a fantastic experience. I would like to give a huge thanks for all the people who have supported me.”
A Christmas auction is planned for the evening of Friday 29th November, giving guests the chance to bid on various lots including a day out at Bath Racecourse, a round of golf at Cumberwell Park and a balloon ride. Tickets are £20 and include drinks on arrival, canapés and live entertainment.
