THE war memorial at Cooper Tires will be saved for the town by Melksham Town Council who will collect the memorial and put it into storage.
The memorial is a bronze book detailing the names of Avon employees who died fighting in World War I and World War II. It was agreed by councillors at the economic development and planning committee meeting last month to move the memorial into storage, before planning where it will permanently be placed in the town.
Deputy mayor cllr Tom Price said, “Every single year around Remembrance, all the employees would go out on the Friday of remembrance and have a minute’s silence; it was a big part of the workforce. They made it very clear they want the memorial to still be part of the town. As an ex-employee myself, I would like it to be a part of the town.”
This decision follows the closure of the Cooper Tires site in December after 112 years in Melksham.
Local history groups including Melksham and District Historical Association (MDHA) visited the site on Friday 19th January to begin collecting historical items of interest. The items collected by MDHA are currently being stored; the group say they may be holding an event later in the year, in the Assembly Hall, to showcase these items.
