Melksham Town Council is warning that graffiti and vandalism in public spaces are costing taxpayers money as it continues to deal with damage across the town.
The council says staff are spending time and resources cleaning up graffiti and other vandalism, including damage in public toilets, and have been reporting all incidents to the police.
Councillor Phil Alford said, “The council are having to spend serious sums of public money cleaning up graffiti and other vandalism related damage. I would implore people to stop destroying some of our towns most needed facilities. I will be asking the clerk to look into prosecutions.”
He also raised concerns about graffiti on utility cabinets and the challenges councils face when trying to get companies to remove it.
The council is urging anyone who witnesses graffiti or vandalism to report it and is asking residents to help protect public facilities. Incidents can be reported to Wiltshire Police online, through the Wiltshire Council MyWilts app or via Melksham Town Council’s online reporting page.
