IT was the end of an era at Countrywide this month when the long-serving manager stepped down after 40 years at the country store.
David Tucker worked his last full day at the shop on 15th June, his 65th birthday, and was treated with cake and party food by friends and colleagues.
David, who has lived in Chippenham all his life, has worked at what is now Countrywide since he was 15 – 49 years and 10 months exactly, he says.
David said, “It’s a funny feeling stepping down after all these years. I’m still going to be working part-time one day a week, but I’m very apprehensive about it!
“I was only 15 when I started as an apprentice mechanic and I’ve stayed as the store has changed over the years.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and I’ll really miss coming to work every day. I think the hardest part will be leaving the people; we’ve got such a great team here and some fantastic customers. I’ve met some real characters!
“Retail has changed a lot since I started here – customers’ expectations are much higher now, and online shopping has been a huge change.
“I’m hoping to spend a lot more time cycling and swimming. I cycle on the lanes round Chippenham a lot but it’ll be good to have the time to travel and cycle in different places.”
David was presented with a civic award by the Mayor of Melksham, councillor Terri Welch, at a ceremony in March for his long service to the town.
“I was humbled and honoured to be given the award,” he said. “For me it was just coming to work, but to be recognised by the people of Melksham in that way was unexpected and very special.”
Tracy Sklenar, a colleague of David’s said, “I’ve worked with David for 26 years and I’ll be sad to see him go! It’s the end of an era. For me and a lot of staff David has always been a part of Countrywide.
“He’s been a fantastic boss, the best you could ask for, because he genuinely cares. He’s a friend as well and he’d do anything for any of us, in or out of work.
“It’s going to be very different without him here and we’ll all miss him.”
