PEOPLE in Melksham are taking the fight to breast cancer with a series of fundraising events throughout this month.
October is breast cancer awareness month and to mark the occasion, local people have been busy dressing up, completing exercise challenges and hosting coffee mornings.
Curves in Avonside have already hosted a circuit relay and hula-hoop marathon, as well as taking part in Pink Fridays where staff and customers wear pink and donate to Breast Cancer Care.
Curves, the fitness centre for just women is also waiving all service fees in October when customers sign up for a four-month contract. In return for this being given away for free, a donation of £20 is recommended to Breast Cancer Care. Manager Sue Armstrong said, “We get involved in breast cancer awareness month every year and we try to do our best to raise awareness and much-needed funds.
“The ‘no service fee’ means that it is a great opportunity for people to get into exercising and donate to a fantastic cause. Exercising will also improve your fitness and help in the prevention of many diseases.
“We hope to raise £500 in total from all our events and will also be inviting previous members to rejoin for no service fee if they donate to breast cancer awareness. We have already raised £130 so far, so hopefully we will reach our target by the end of the month.”
Curves is also hosting a bring and buy sale throughout October and will be hosting a coffee morning on Wednesday 30th October which will be open to everyone.
Elsewhere, a fundraising event called ‘Everyone is beautiful for breast cancer’ has been set up by three local women.
Jacs Brady, Beth Dark and Jo Gruenegan from Fairies Wear Boots came up with the idea that invites people to dress up in their ball gowns, tuxedos or smartest party dress on Friday 25th October and donate to breast cancer. Organiser of the event Jacs Brady said, “I don’t know anyone that hasn’t been affected by cancer in some way, shape or form. It’s nasty, and it’s time to stop. Support those who are battling by joining with us to show that everyone is beautiful, inside and out, and we value and love them whatever they are going through. I hope as many people as possible dress up and let’s have some fun. We hope to raise £1,000 which I know sounds like a lot of money but if everyone that reads this gives £1, I’m sure we would reach that target easily.”
A wishing well has been set up in Candy Jax where people can donate or enter a cupcake sweepstake competition. The competition involves choosing a cupcake which you believe includes the most chocolate bits. To find out more or to get involved and donate visit www.justgiving. com/everyoneisbeautiful
Tops hair salon are also getting involved as they are hosting a raffle to win a gigantic jar of sweets. Visit the salon to find out more.
