BEANACRE and Melksham Cricket Club is looking forward to an exciting year and has some big changes lined up at the pavilion.
The club, which has had to reduce its facilities to one ground – at Melksham House – is set to benefit from the new health and wellbeing centre development, and is stepping up its efforts to get young people involved in cricket.
Club secretary Andy Footner said, “It has been a very busy winter off the pitch and, as a result, we should see the club flourish over the next few years. The rising cost of ground upkeep means we can no longer afford to run two grounds, and it was with great sadness we decided to move all club activities to the ground at Melksham House.
“However, we were very pleased to accept the health and wellbeing project’s offer of an upgrade to the current building while the main campus build takes place, and then a new pavilion to replace the old one by the start of the 2018 season.
“The club would also like to thank Tony and his team at Autotech garage, for kindly renewing their sponsorship of both adult and junior sections for another season.”
The club is stepping up involvement with its junior section, and has a number of ways for young people and children to get involved with the game.
With the help of Wiltshire and Swindon Sport and Active Trowbridge, the club recently started running free after-school sessions for pupils at Melksham Oak.
Youth training at Melksham House began last month, runs on Friday evenings, and the club will this year be entering a side in the U11 Bath League.
Adult cricketers will be playing league games on Saturdays, and new players are invited to go along to training and try their hand for a free first session.
Andy continued, “We are always on the look out for new members for both adult and junior sections. It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, or what your ability is; please pop along on a match day or training night to have a chat.
“If you are a local business who may want to get involved by way of a little sponsorship, we have a number of packages available, just get in touch.”
