FA funding boost for Town

MELKSHAM Town FC has received a £7,000 funding boost from the Premier League Matchday Support Fund.

The money will be used to help the club’s costs of adjustments that have needed to be made to safely cater for the return of players and supporters to the InfiLED Arena at Oakfields during the pandemic. 

Club chairman, Darren Perrin, told Melksham News, “We are very indebted to the Premier League, this will be a massive help to us in these very troubling times.”

  • Melksham man honoured at Buckingham Palace for 55 years of volunteering A volunteer from Melksham has been recognised at Buckingham Palace for 55 years of service to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), in a special celebration hosted by the current Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward. Steve Coles, who has supported thousands of young people to develop new skills and build their self-belief, completed his own Gold DofE Award in 1973 and has been volunteering his time for the charity for over 55 years. He joined thousands of other volunteers, award holders and their loved ones at the palace on Monday 12th May for a festival-style celebration. Throughout his decades of service, Steve has helped countless young people as a DofE expedition assessor, trainer and mentor. He also spent 12 years as the DofE manager for the Sea Cadets, where he saw over 11,000 young people begin their award journey and more than 3,000 complete it.   • Guide groups begin fundraising drive to save Guide Hut from closure Melksham Guides have launched a major fundraising campaign to raise £25,000 for vital roof repairs to their Guide Hut – or risk losing their long-standing home. The Guide Hut, located off Bath Road near King George V Park, is facing serious issues due to a leaking roof. Without the necessary repairs, the building will become unsafe to use and could be forced to close within 18 months, threatening the future of Girlguiding in the town, which dates back to 1922. Built in 1959, the hut hosts weekly meetings for over 100 local girls in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. It also supports other community groups, including Slimming World and Melksham Ukulele Club. “A few months ago, some of the parents of the girls who use the hut discovered that there is a serious need for repairs to the building that will ensure its future use – not only for the girls, but also for other hall users,” said Brownie leader Helen Short.   • Semington pupils bury time capsule with help from housebuilder Puplis at St George’s C of E Primary School have buried a special time capsule on their grounds. The activity saw children fill the capsule with drawings, letters and mementos from daily life in 2025. It was organised in partnership with David Wilson Homes South West – which is currently building new homes off Semington Road – to help capture a snapshot of the present day for future generations. As part of the celebration, the housebuilder also presented the school with more than £500 worth of books from Usborne Books to its library, to help encourage a lifelong love of reading among the 91 pupils that attend the school from reception up to Year 6.   • Melksham golfers raise vital funds for Dorothy House at regional tournament Passionate golfers from Melksham have raised over £500 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, surpassing the group’s initial fundraising target. The Melksham Grinders Golf Association held a tournament at the prestigious Nicklaus and Kernow courses at St Mellion Estate in Cornwall recently, where they played against golfers from across the region. The aim was to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care, which recently launched the ‘Together in Adversity’ campaign, highlighting the charity’s critical financial shortfall and its urgent need for support. “As a team, we come together not just for the love of golf but to make a difference in our community,” said James Dix, spokesperson for the club. “Whether it’s through charity tournaments, fundraising challenges, or simply spreading awareness, we believe in using our passion for golf to help those in need.   • Colouring competition winners crowned The winners of the Melksham Seed Swap colouring competition have been unveiled, with the winning entries set to be displayed in the Factory Shop window. The colouring competition is run as part of the Melksham Seed and Plant Swap at the Rachel Fowler Centre, organised by the Pet Food Bank. Organiser Wendy Isaacs said, “We had lots of wonderful entries, and it genuinely was so very difficult to judge. Thank you to all the children who took part; we loved looking at your beautiful artwork.” In the three to five years old category, first place went to Gaby Hippesley, second to Ivy-May Saati, and third to Dorothy Sprules.   • Family’s fundraiser keeps son’s memory alive The family of Melksham teenager Ben Smith, who died nearly three years ago after being assaulted on a night out in Bath, have raised nearly £7,000 for charities that supported them after his death. The funds were raised through a coffee morning last year and a fun football funday held at Oakfield Stadium, home of Melksham Town FC, on Sunday 27th April. Money was raised for The Ben Saunders Foundation, which supports children and young adults with cancer; SmileForJoel, which helps families affected by murder and terrorism; and One Punch UK, which raises awareness about the devastation a single punch can cause. Ben started playing football with Melksham Town FC’s youth team when he was six and continued for many years. The funday is held in honour of Ben’s love of football and featured a match between two teams made up of players who had played alongside Ben and his brother Alex. This year’s winners were Ben’s brother’s team. Following the match, there was live music from the Tin Shack Band, which had children playing tambourines.   • Sparklers raise vital funds for RUHX cancer services A social group in Melksham has raised vital funds for the Royal United Hospital’s cancer appeal at a fun Chocolate Bingo evening. Sparklers raised £542.40 for the RUHX Cancer Appeal, which supports the Dyson Centre at the hospital, which brings together cancer services under one roof, including research, technology, oncology, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. “It was an amazing evening and we would like to thank everybody that came and supported us, either by playing bingo or giving us a donation of chocolate or a donation of money,” said Kay Perry, member of Sparklers, a social group based at the Melksham Baptist Church on Old Broughton Road. The group meets every Monday mornings from 9.30am-11.30am and offers a chance to have a chat and do gentle exercise to music.   • Tree-mendous occasion as Blenheim House celebrates Earth Day The community came together recently for a ceremonial tree planting and hands-on activities in a local care home’s garden to celebrate Earth Day. Residents and staff at Blenheim House, part of the Berkley Care Group, planned the activities to mark Earth Day, celebrated annually on 22nd April. The idea came from the home’s events team, who wanted to create a meaningful time for residents to connect with nature and learn more about the impact of our everyday choices have on the planet. The morning began with an interactive session exploring ecosystems and the importance of recycling. A remote-controlled shark even made an appearance, helping to illustrate the effects of plastic pollution on marine life. Residents were introduced to the concept of the floating plastic islands in the Pacific Ocean and learnt how their own actions, including using the correct recycling bins, could help make a difference.   • Residents step back in time for wartime walk The community stepped back in time recently as part of a World War II walk around Melksham. The Melksham and District Historical Association’s walk was attended by 55 people, including 14 visitors and two new members, and led by chair Paul Carter and secretary Peter Maslen. “We were blessed with lovely weather, and we split into two groups,” explained Paul. “We walked 6,000 steps around some key and former sites in the town. Some of the sites included the town hall, the Picture House, the Cottage Hospital, Avon Rubber, and the war memorial, amongst others. “Refreshments were provided during and after at the Assembly Hall, along with pictures of the time. “Thank you to all those who turned out for what is a relatively new addition to our programme.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
