Two music teachers at Melksham Oak Community School have been recognised for their work in educating students about music, in this year’s Wiltshire Music Education Awards.
Head of the music department Emma Cypher-Neal and Mike Thomas were both shortlisted for awards that celebrate teachers, music leaders and schools in the county who dedicate themselves to creating outstanding music education for young people.
Emma was shortlisted and won Wiltshire Secondary School Teacher of the Year Award. She said, “I am so proud to have been nominated for this award and flattered that someone has taken the time to write and show their appreciation of what I do on a day-to-day basis. Every day is a new day, with new talent being shown and new challenges but this is why I became a teacher. There is certainly never a dull moment or indeed a quiet moment in the department!”
Mike Thomas was shortlisted for Wiltshire Music Educator of the Year Award. He said, “My favourite thing about being a music teacher is watching students’ musical performances and seeing how they have grown in confidence and resilience.
“It’s easy to forget how much practise is put into a performance and having a small part in encouraging and supporting the students reach their potential is so rewarding from seeing them perform in a practice room, in front of a class or within a music concert. The smile at the end of the performance makes it all worth it.”
Emma added, “The music department at The Oak is vibrant and energetic with all of the facilities being used not only during lessons but at break and lunch time and after school. The important word here is ‘team’ and that means not only the two of us who educate every day, but the support we receive from our peripatetic instrumental tutors, colleagues and parents.”
