Former mayor proposes riverside restaurant at Avon site

A former mayor of Melksham has put forward an idea for a riverside restaurant at the former Cooper Tires site as a possible option for when the site is redeveloped.   

Richard Wiltshire, who was mayor of Melksham from 2007 to 2010, has proposed a restaurant could be positioned along the River Avon overlooking the planned lock on the future route of the Wilts & Berks Canal.

Richard said the idea could provide an opportunity to make better use of the river frontage as the 26-acre site is redeveloped. He said the idea could support future regeneration of the area.

“We are all aware that the site is up for redevelopment and I think there is an opportunity to look at the river verge,” said Richard.

His concept is for a restaurant to be built on pile foundations set into the grassed riverbank, aiming to preserve the character of the waterfront, including many trees.

A two-storey circular entrance building beside the town bridge would form the focal point of the design. The upper floor would provide dedicated office space, generating additional rental income, while the ground floor would accommodate a lounge bar, kitchen facilities and a dining area with views across the river and the weir.

The former Cooper Tires factory site, which closed in December 2023, is planned for mixed-use development. The site was sold to Melksham Development Company in 2025, which has committed to regenerating the land for housing, employment space and leisure opportunities.

Richard said, “This proposal presents an opportunity to create a striking new landmark within the Avon Works redevelopment – a feature that enhances the town’s riverside environment and supports future regeneration.”

Richard has put the idea forward to the town council for discussion. The town council cannot decide what the site is ultimately used for, but could comment on or support any formal planning application.
