A FORMER RAF pilot has celebrated his 100th birthday in Melksham.
Roy Atwill was joined by a group of 25 family and friends for the birthday celebrations at Blenheim House care home in Melksham on November 22. Amongst those attending were Roy’s son Richard, daughter-in-law Val, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The celebration included a buffet, complemented with wine, tea, and soft drinks and adding to the occasion’s significance, was a letter received from the King.
“The atmosphere was joyful, with family and friends sharing stories and memories of Roy’s life and achievements,” said Clare Hodges, general manager of Blenheim House. “One experience highlighted was the garden party he attended on 6 July 1988 with the late Queen at Buckingham Place.”
Roy was born in Bristol on November 22, 1923, to Grace and Bill and has lived a life marked by service and adventure. He joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1942 and trained as a pilot in South Africa. It was there that he met his late wife, Racheal, also a pilot. The couple married in 1946 and shared numerous interests, including skiing and ballroom dancing. They shared several memorable holidays in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Roy’s career in the RAF lasted 50 years, and he also worked in air traffic control at Bulford.
Despite his remarkable life experiences, Roy attributes his longevity to taking life as it comes, without relying on a “secret elixir of life potion or special exercise regime”.
“It is a privilege to celebrate Roy’s 100th birthday here at Blenheim House,” added Clare. “Roy’s century of life is not just about the years but the extraordinary journey he has travelled – from serving in the RAF to his adventures across the globe with his late wife, Rachael.
“Today’s celebration is more than just a birthday party; it’s a tribute to a man who has witnessed and been part of a remarkable era of history.
“These stories are the threads that weave the fabric of our community at Blenheim House. Here’s to celebrating not just a milestone but a man who has embraced life’s journey with strength and grace.”
