The Friends Garden in King Street has been officially handed over to Melksham Town Council
The paperwork was signed last month to complete the transfer from the Spiritualist Church to the council at a special service.
The garden, located behind the former Spiritualist Church in King Street, is intended to be a community space that can be enjoyed and used by residents as a quiet place to come and sit.
“The building on King Street originally belonged to the Quakers, hence the name the Friends Garden,” explained Terri Welch who has been involved in the 10-year project to see the town council take on the gardens.
“They worshipped here and the garden was a burial site. Numbers dropped and the spiritualists bought the building and garden. After many years they also left, but with the intention that the garden should pass to the council, to be used as a peaceful place.
“Over the past 10 years, Melksham Bloomers have looked after the garden and it has been open for the past few months. It is a beautiful, peaceful place to sit and enjoy the trees, plants, birds and squirrels.”
A service was held in the garden, attended by representatives of the church group and the town council, on Saturday 6th August to complete the transfer to the town council.
