Frustration over muddy section of school route

Frustration over muddy section of school route

Concerns have been raised about muddy conditions on an unfinished section of a footpath used by pupils travelling to and from Melksham Oak Community School.

The issue affects a track at Woolmore Farm, which lies at the end of the tarmac footpath connecting Melksham East to the school. The unsurfaced section is used daily by students and other pedestrians and is intended to link the route to the A365 Bath Road.

Recent wet weather has left the track heavily churned and waterlogged, making it difficult to avoid mud. Parents say children are regularly arriving home with shoes and clothing covered despite efforts to pick their way around the worst areas.

One parent said, “While I appreciate that the school has done what it can to help pupils avoid the worst of the conditions, it is still astonishing that the council has allowed the path to be left like this. Away from the school entrance, other users do not have the option of avoiding the mud and it feels as though little consideration has been given to the wider public.”

Another parent added, “With the really wet weather recently my daughter has been coming home with her shoes covered in mud because it’s impossible to avoid it. The path just turns into a bog.”

Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said Wiltshire Council is not responsible for maintaining the track but that the countryside team will investigate if there is a way of diverting the water.

He said, “This section sits within land at Woolmore Farm, which was included in a planning application for a residential and commercial development carrying a condition to complete the remaining link up to the A365.

“Unfortunately, completion of this section is outside of Wiltshire Council’s control and linked to when the approved development progresses. We understand no work has yet taken place on site, and there are no Section 106 funds available for the council to complete the remaining footway.

“The incomplete section of the path is not in council ownership and therefore the council cannot carry out improvement works. Our countryside team will investigate if there is a way of diverting the water but has also contacted the school suggesting that they unlock their gates where they adjoin the black-top cycle route during periods of very wet weather, negating the need for children to negotiate the wet ground.”

This has always been the case and the path is only to link the school to Melksham East. The area which is the subject of this article, as stated in the article, isn’t council property. Parents need to tell children to take a different exit from the school to avoid this muddy area.

  • Plans for 275 new homes in Melksham

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Plans to add 275 houses to a proposed 500-home estate on farmland in east Melksham have been revealed.

Land promotion firm Gleeson Land is asking Wiltshire Council for permission to build the homes on land east of Blackmore Farm.

Gleeson Land is not a developer and, if it wins planning permission, it will sell the land to a builder.

The 27-hectare site is 2.5km from the town centre and is next to a site that was granted outline planning consent for 500 houses in May 2025.

Gleeson Land says 30 per cent of the houses – 83 units – would be designated ‘affordable’.

Vehicular access to the development would be via a new T junction from Sandridge Common.

The applicant describes the proposed development as a “landscape-led scheme” in which 70 per cent of the land will be green space.

  • Melksham colleagues raise over £1,000 in 100km coastal challenge

Two Melksham fundraisers have taken on one of the UK’s toughest endurance challenges, raising more than £1,000 for mental health charities in the process.

Sherelyn Cowles and Corey Wyatt competed in the gruelling Jurassic Coast 100km Ultra last month, tackling the demanding coastal route from Corfe Castle to Bridport.

The duo, who work for local accountancy firm, Gooding Accounts, took on the course over one of the toughest sections of coastal path in the UK. Sherelyn crossed the finish line at 5am after walking continuously for more than 22 hours. Sadly, Corey was forced to withdraw at the 82km mark after suffering an ankle injury.

  • 90-year-old Melksham volunteer honoured for service

A Melksham volunteer who has dedicated nearly 15 years to supporting people living with multiple sclerosis has been recognised for his long service.

Mike Park, who is 90, has played a key technical role at Wessex MS Therapy Centre in Warminster, helping to maintain the systems that support oxygen therapy for members.

As a mark of recognition for his service, he was invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. He was accompanied by Sarah Williamson, Deputy Director of The Wessex MS Therapy Centre.

Fundraising and events coordinator for the centre, Amanda Strong, said, “Thanks to the dedication of volunteers like Mike, around 120 people each week are able to access oxygen therapy and ongoing support that helps improve their quality of life.

  • Local resident celebrates 10 years of tour company success

A tour company founded by a Bowerhill resident is marking its 10th anniversary this month.

In and Beyond Bath was launched in 2016 by Jules Mittra, who previously worked in teaching, after starting the business from a spare room with a focus on guided travel experiences in the South West.

Jules said the idea for the business developed during a trip to Peru and from a desire to create more personal travel experiences.

The company offers private and small-group tours across Bath, the Cotswolds, Stonehenge and surrounding areas, with a focus on local storytelling and less crowded itineraries.

It now employs 15 people and has received recognition including a Gold Award at the 2024 to 2025 Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards, along with multiple TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards.

The evening featured live music from Frome Street Bandits, who performed a lively set using brass and percussion instruments.

Mayor of Melksham Saffi Rabey said the launch had been well received.

  • Church bells ring out to mark historic project

New bells have been added to a Melksham church, marking the completion of one of the tower’s most significant projects.

The peal at St Michael’s Church has been expanded from eight to ten bells and was recently dedicated by the Rt Revd Andrew Rumsey shortly before leaving the Diocese. The bells were first rung together as a full ring of ten in January, with a dedication service held last month. The first quarter peal on the new bells was rung later that evening.

Plans to increase the number of bells were first discussed more than 20 years ago but gained momentum following the coronation of King Charles III and the centenary of the current bells, which were cast in 1924.

Ringers wrote to the Palace to ask if the Royal Cypher of King Charles III could be included on two new bells. Bell-ringer Chris Bush said, “We were told that we could incorporate the Royal Cypher as long as the order to cast the bells was placed in the year of the coronation.”

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

The Tourist Information Centre

This week’s love for Melksham comes from the hub of helpful happiness that is the Melksham Tourist Information Centre (TIC).

Although the name suggests it’s for visitors, the centre is a valuable resource for everyone in Melksham, with a surprising range of services, signposting and even souvenirs for sale.

The TIC is just opposite the Post Office on Church Street, and crammed with every possible leaflet, map, book and brochure about the area. It’s an excellent hub of community connection and advice. There are bus timetables and maps, tickets and tips for every type of transport and tourism, as well as a popular section of secondhand books and jigsaws for sale, locally made honey, cards and crafts and a gallery of local artwork. When I have friends visiting, I like to make sure we pop in to pick up some unique Melksham merch of magnets, mugs or tea towels to celebrate our lovely town. If the queue at the Post Office is too long, it’s great to remember the TIC also sell stamps!

With the vibrant social calendar of Melksham at their fingertips the volunteers are a source of wisdom on what to do in and around town – from theatre shows and Rock’n’Roll dances to Historical Society talks and comedy nights and you can get tickets for Melksham Open Gardens, the Choral Society, Melksham Music and Drama performances and the Garden and Produce Show.
