Melksham will be joining the nation to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday this summer, and the community is invited to the Picnic in the Park in King George V Playing Field on Sunday 12th June.
From midday till 5pm, the playing field will be the site of a grand community picnic.
Organiser and deputy town clerk, Miriam Zaccarelli said, “The event will be free and very informal, with everyone invited to bring along picnics to share in the celebration.
“There will be tea and coffee and soft drinks available to buy, and everyone is welcome to bring their own tables, chairs and blankets to enjoy a picnic with everyone.
“Groups of ten or more people are invited to reserve an area in order to ensure a comfortable space.”
Service of Thanksgiving
Before the picnic, churches in Melksham are organising a joint Service of Thanksgiving for the life and service of Queen Elizabeth II at 10.30am in the King George V Playing Field.
Arranged by the Melksham Family of Churches, this will feature worship songs that have been written in the last 90 years and will be a family-oriented event in which it is hoped that children from local schools will participate.
The service will finish by midday, allowing all who have attended to enjoy the remainder of the day’s activities.
Bunting
The organisers plan to decorate the whole field and are asking for contributions from local businesses and people, of 10 metres of handmade bunting.
“It can be as colourful and creative as you like,” Miriam said, “and you can include your logos and themes, as long as it incorporates some element of the colour gold. As well as being a great opportunity for promotion, it’s a way to contribute to a couple of kilometres of creative collaboration for the Queen!”
The whole event is free, and for more information or to book your group’s place call 01225 704187 or sign up on the town council website www.melkshamtown.co.uk.
