Get your feet tapping and dance on with ‘authentic’ Cliff Richard and The Shadows tribute act

A CRITICALLY acclaimed Cliff Richard and The Shadows tribute act is performing at the Assembly Hall this weekend.

Simon Goodall and The Bourne Again Shadows will be talking to the stage on Saturday 2nd April, as part of their 2022 tour.

The band’s repertoire includes Cliff Richard chart-toppers like Summer Holiday, Living Doll, Move It and Please Don’t Tease, and classic Shadows’ number one hits including Apache, Wonderful Land, Foot Tapper and Dance On.

Simon Goodall, who is a professional solo and session singer, developed his ‘Tribute to Cliff’ act after many people had commented just how much he sounded like Cliff.  He teamed up with The Bourne Again Shadows for a debut concert in 2014, and they have worked together regularly since.

The event promoter says, “Simon Goodall and The Bourne Again Shadows are critically acclaimed as the most authentic Cliff and The Shadows tribute act. And looking at the comments on www.cliffshadowstribute.co.uk, it is clear to see why.

“Listening to some of their music, Bob Henrit, who played with Adam Faith, Argent, Don McLean and The Kinks said, ‘I really thought I was listening to a recording of Cliff and the guys!  How good is that?’

“Fellow musician Pete Lincoln, who worked in Cliff Richards’ band, commented, ‘The emulation of The Shadows’ sound is spot on, and the ‘Cliff’ vocals are uncanny’. Even Sir Cliff himself has said that the band vocalist Simon Goodall ‘….is without doubt the best ‘Cliff Sound-alike in the business’.”

Tickets are available from the Assembly Hall box office on 01225 709887 or online at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/booking/venueplan/RdiEJKhzXNnT

  • Melksham soldiers remembered at pop-up museum

Two Melksham residents who gave their lives in the world wars are being honoured in the town hall’s museum space.

One cabinet features a photo of Private Ernest Missen, who was killed on 9th April 1917, and another highlights Gunner Claude Merchant, who was killed on 10th January 1945.

There is also a photo of VE Day celebrations outside the town hall in May 1945.

Viewing is available during town hall opening hours until early December.

  • Community centre to host charity makers market

A charity makers market is being held at the Riverside Centre next month to raise funds for two local causes.

The Christmas market is due to take place on Saturday 13th December from 10am to 2pm, selling handcrafted items by local makers, including the Men’s Shed.

All proceeds from the market will be donated to the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity, which provides critical medical care by helicopter and critical care car. Funds will also go to Julia’s House in Devizes, a children’s hospice.

Chair of the centre, Chris Pickett, said, “Whilst we are fundraising to improve the toilet facilities in the centre, we are well aware that other charities are in need too. People can expect to see items from the Men’s Shed, including Christmas items such as reindeer, table decorations, toys and practical gifts like a keyboard.”

  • Melksham Toy Appeal: give a little joy this Christmas – and help the planet too

Local residents are being invited to help spread festive cheer and support a greener Christmas by donating new or good-condition toys for children across Melksham.

The Melksham Toy Appeal is now open for donations until 30th November, with drop-off points at Giffords Surgery and Melksham Town Hall.

Organisers are encouraging families to take the opportunity to reuse and recycle by passing on toys in excellent condition that are no longer played with. By donating pre-loved toys, residents can switch toys and reduce waste at a time of year when waste often increases.

Then, on Saturday 6th December, during the Melksham Christmas Lights Switch-On, Friends of Giffords Surgery will be hosting a festive fun event in the Council Chamber at Melksham Town Hall from 2pm to 6pm. Everyone will be welcome to come and take some toys for Christmas.

  • Car park work begins at Shurnhold Fields

Work to install flood prevention measures and a car park at Shurnhold Fields has begun.

Wiltshire Council’s contractor, MGroup, is carrying out the works at Shurnhold Fields, a popular green space off Dunch Lane.

The work, which started on 17th November, is expected to take five weeks.

The project includes flood prevention measures for Dunch Lane residents, funded by a £90,000 grant from the Environment Agency.

The work to create a car park is being carried out on behalf of Melksham Without Parish Council and Melksham Town Council, which jointly own the site and will each contribute £12,500 towards the project.

An award-winning drama society in Holt is set to perform its next production at the end of this month, titled The Kitchen Sink.

Holt Players will be performing the comedy show from Thursday 27th to Saturday 29th November at Holt Village Hall.

“It is a bittersweet and poignant comedy about small changes and big dreams in an ordinary, or rather unusual, family in Yorkshire,” said Fiona Campbell, a member of Holt Players.

“It will have you roaring with laughter one minute and reaching for your hanky the next.”

  • Melksham wildlife artist features on BBC Countryfile

A wildlife artist from Melksham recently featured on BBC Countryfile, making paints out of clay at a local woodland.

Naomi Joy Fox appeared on the show on Sunday 2nd November at Green Lane Woodland near Trowbridge, making paints from clay she had dug out of the soil, using them to finish a painting of bats.

“It was a really amazing experience,” said Naomi. “It was just me and a small crew in a woodland; it was very beautiful and very casual and calm, which was really lovely.”

Naomi has been working on a project with Arts Council England, exploring wildlife at local Wiltshire Wildlife Trust sites and using pigments dug from the soil to create her art.

  • Local boxer to compete for Commonwealth title

A local boxer is preparing to fight for the Commonwealth bantamweight title in London this month.

Megan Redstall, who trains at The Contender Gym in Melksham, is set to face Laura Pain at York Hall on Sunday 30th November.

“I’m excited and nervous,” said Megan. “Any boxer who says they’re not nervous is lying. It’s going to be very exciting; it’s got lots of people talking, which is good.

“She’s going to be my toughest opponent yet. We’re both unbeaten, and we’re both trying to win.”

“Hopefully this is the fight that can be that break for me,” she said.

The fight comes after Megan was due to contend for the Super Flyweight Commonwealth title last year, but her opponent’s illness meant the fight was cancelled.
