THE Melksham Fawns under 12s rugby team played their first match on Sunday 1st October, against Ashley Down Old Boys and Weston Hornets.
The team was set up earlier this year, following an increase of girls wanting to play the sport.
“We managed to put out two teams, one played against Ashley Down Old Boys and the other against Weston Hornets,” says Tasha, the team’s manager.
“The girls did an amazing job and showcased all they had been taught over the past couple of months as The Fawns. The games were fast paced and very physical and all of the girls stepped up to the mark to show what they can do.
“The games were well supported by parents, the club’s president, chairman and the youth’s chairman. Alongside this they were supported by some of the Melksham Ladies’ Rugby team, who have worked with the Fawns, creating a fantastic bond between the two teams.
“The coaches and team manager for The Fawns have been working hard behind the scenes to make Melksham RFC the hub for girls’ rugby in Wiltshire for the past 18 months. On Sunday, all their hard work paid off and the day was a huge success.
“I am so proud of what the whole team have achieved; we have had a massive amount of support from all of the parents leading up to this and it’s amazing to see the outcome. I would also like to thank the coaches that I have been working with on this project, Scott Simmons, Dave Fielding, Lawrence Brill, Sam Cox and Maisie Rodger. Without the support and enthusiasm from you guys, this wouldn’t have been possible. Big up the Big Strong Melksham Girls!”
The Fawns next home game is on Sunday 15th October against Tetbury, kick off 11am.
“Please come along and support these fantastic girls,” says Tasha.
