New goal posts will be installed at Riverside Drive after Melksham Town Council agreed to replace the current posts and explore funding options for the project.
Councillors supported the motion, which was put forward by Melksham’s Deputy Mayor Saffi Rabey at the asset management and amenities meeting on Monday 24th February.
“This came off the back of a conversation my fellow councillor, Charlie Stokes, had during a visit to the local school with a young lad who wanted to see a new goal fitted,” explained Cllr Rabey.
At the meeting, Cllr Rabey said the land is owned by Wiltshire Council but that the authority is happy for the town council to replace the goal posts. She also suggested it would be ‘sensible’ for the town council to purchase more than one goal post, noting that a single post costs around £300. However, the aim is to secure funding from external sources.
“I think it would be great to see kids out enjoying the nation’s favourite game in their local area,” said Cllr Rabey, speaking to Melksham News after the meeting.
Melksham Town Council has now delegated authority to the deputy clerk to explore funding possibilities. However, if the town council has to cover the costs, funding will come from Play Area funds.

Great news for local sports! The Riverside Drive goal posts are finally getting an upgrade. This is a welcome improvement for everyone who uses the field. Remember those long waits when the old nets were down? This upgrade reminds me of waiting for the Dinosaur Game to load back in the day – so frustrating! Hopefully, we won’t have any more delays like that. This will definitely enhance the playing experience.
