The Holt branch of the Royal British Legion has won a prestigious award recognising its contribution to the Poppy Appeal over the past three years.
The branch was presented with the Colonel Tempest Cup by the Wiltshire County Royal British Legion, chosen from 47 branches in the county.
“Naturally we are delighted and honoured to be recognised for this. This is the first time Holt has ever received the award,” said Roy Quilliam, a representative for the Holt RBL.
He said the main reason for the increase in Holt’s Poppy Appeal collection was the work of the Holt Crafters, who knitted and crocheted thousands of poppies to form a striking Poppy Cascade displayed at St Katharine’s Church.
The crafters also made poppies to sell and held a concert in the church to mark Remembrance.
“While some of the funds went to other charities, the Holt RBL branch benefited hugely. We are grateful to everyone who donates to the Poppy Appeal, but the efforts of the Holt Crafters are especially significant, and the award of the County Cup is a wonderful recognition of this,” said Roy.
The Holt Crafters have continued making poppies, and this November there will be 10,000 on display. Their work has raised more than £4,200 for the Royal British Legion and £1,000 for Help for Heroes.
