Local training charity The Learning Curve is kicking off the national ‘Be Online’ campaign with a free drop in event at its Challeymead centre.
The national ‘Be Online’ campaign run by UK Online Centres is taking place from 23rd February to 8th March and is designed to inspire more people to use the internet to make their lives easier.
The campaign has three key themes: keeping healthy online, finding work online and the skills to enjoy life online – which includes the online basics and stuff like hobbies, keeping in touch, and doing everyday tasks and chores.
The Learning Curve’s free drop in event is taking place on Monday 23rd February from 1pm-3pm at Unit 3 Challeymead Business Park near ASDA. Visitors will be able to have a go at getting online with tablets, computers and laptops, as well as finding out about the range of free IT courses available, including the 6-week Get Online courses which take place in local libraries across the county.
Terrified of technology? The Learning Curve’s HR & central services manager Kathryn Roynon said, “Many of our learners have never touched a computer and soon surprise themselves with how much they can do online.”
Previous learners Doreen Milner, 78, and Stella Cruse, 80, enjoyed their new skills so much they were chosen by UK Online Centres to star in the national Get Online Week campaign in 2014.
Stella said, “There’s no denying that when you know practically nothing about computers the first few sessions are quite hard work. Fortunately we’ve never been afraid of hard work, and now Doreen and I can do all sorts of things online that we’d never even imagined.”
Stella has now been nominated for an Adult Learner Week award for the way in which she, together with Doreen, inspired so many other people across the country to learn something new.
The Learning Curve is also launching free two-week IT for Jobseeker courses which are starting at Wiltshire libraries from the beginning of March. From using job searching websites and understanding how social media is now a key recruitment tool, to sending out your CV by email, the world of job searching has now moved on considerably.
According to UK Online Centres, a lack of internet skills will have a negative impact on your job search:
During the Be Online drop in session, light lunches and homemade cakes will be for sale in aid of local charities The Learning Curve and People Against Poverty.
