A large contingent of the ladies’ section of Avon Bowls Club witnessed the inauguration of the Chairman of Avon, Dawn Edwards, as President of Bowls Wiltshire Ladies for 2017/18 at the Annual General Meeting which was hosted by Devizes Bowls Club on Saturday 11th November.
Press officer, Pauline Baker reports, “The meeting was well attended by lady bowlers from all over the County and the retiring President, Mrs. Mo Woolley, when handing over the chain of office wished Mrs. Edwards every success during her forthcoming term.
“The meeting was followed by a luncheon at Devizes Conservative Club at which the Guest of Honour was Mrs. Hazel Marke, Junior Vice-President Bowls England. In her speech, Mrs. Marke spoke of her pride at the progress of lady bowlers in what had often been considered a game for elderly gentlemen only, and about the encouragement being given to younger players The new President presented Mrs. Marke with a bouquet and thanked her for attending the occasion.
“At the end of the meal the retiring President presented prizes to the winners of the various county competitions held during the season, which had now come to an end. Avon Bowls’ Georgena Newman did the Club proud by being Runner-Up in the Under 25 Singles Championship and has been recommended to the selection board for a possible trial in the All-England Under 25 team, quite an achievement for a 17 year old.
“As President, Mrs. Edwards will be kept busy with various functions not only throughout Wiltshire but also further afield, such as attending the prestigious finals held at Leamington Spa next summer and Avon Bowls Club members will watch her progress with pride, as well as giving her their full support.”
