Year six children from The Manor School recently took part in the Junior Good Citizen programme, which is a multi-agency event organised by the police.
Junior Good Citizen is designed to educate children about situations which can end up causing injuries or accidents, encourages them to respond appropriately to emergency situations and highlights the contribution that they can make to creating safer communities by being ‘good citizens.’
The children were put into groups and then faced different scenarios, each designed to help them learn about personal and community safety. These included staying safe online, anti-social behaviour, railway safety, first aid, food hygiene, fire safety, personal safety and road safety.
Emma Shires, deputy headteacher, said, “We teach our children how to stay safe throughout our curriculum in school. The Junior Good Citizen programme enables students to put what they have learned in the classroom into practice through real life scenarios.
“Some of the activities highlighted the fact that children can become so engrossed in technology that they forget to be vigilant of what is around them.
“Junior Good Citizen gave us a platform to explore this further with the students. It was a great afternoon enjoyed by all who participated.”
