SHOPS in Melksham will be staying open late on this Thursday 15th December so you can shop locally this Christmas.

Shops include Komix on Church Street, CJ’s, Briggsy’s Barber Shop and  Andy York Photography, all based in Littlebrook Centre, the Factory Shop Melksham Beauty Clinic and Two Little Ducks on Bath Road.

CJ’s will be hosting a craft event so if you’re making Christmas gifts, pop in and see Simon about having a stall.

  • Sarum Avenue residents present £16,000 to air ambulance during special visit Residents of Sarum Avenue have presented a £16,000 cheque to the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance, following their successful Christmas lights fundraiser. The presentation took place during a special visit to the air ambulance base, where residents were able to witness first-hand the vital work the service does. Shortly after the cheque was handed over, the alarm went off and the helicopter was called out to an emergency. Residents, including children, had the opportunity to watch the helicopter take off and track its progress on the ops room monitors—seeing their fundraising efforts put to work in real time. The £16,000 was raised through donations collected during a Christmas lights display on Sarum Avenue in December. With 22 houses participating, the event brought together the community, who decorated their homes to create a festive display that attracted visitors from Melksham and beyond.   • Melksham family unites to raise funds for Dorothy House A Melksham family has come together to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care to thank the charity for its ‘outstanding’ support for their dad and grandad who is living with a terminal illness. The family has raised £1,456 through a series of fundraising events for the charity after Paul Cotter was diagnosed with a terminal illness last July. “He was only given two months to live,” said Paul’s daughter, Charlotte Watts. “But he’s still here with us, which is absolutely amazing.” The family’s fundraising campaign, dubbed ‘Fundraising February’, kicked off with a birthday party for Paul. “Instead of presents and cards, people donated to the hospice and we raised around £220,” said Charlotte.   • Owner shares relief as dog saved from eight-day hole ordeal A Melksham dog owner has expressed his heartfelt thanks to a pet charity for saving his dog, who had been trapped in a hole for eight days. Temple, a 13-year-old Jack Russell, went missing whilst on a walk in fields near King George V Park. Upon hearing gunshots from a farm in the distance, Temple bolted, disappearing into a fox or badger sett, where he remained trapped for eight days. “He has been in holes before but he usually comes straight back out,” says his owner, Mark Cummings. “When we realised he wasn’t coming out, it was an awful experience. We got our friends and family to help us search for him; it was truly traumatic. Pets and dogs are such an integral part of the family — it would have just been awful if we were on a walk and his time with us ended.” In case Temple had escaped from the hole later in the day, Mark launched a Melksham- wide search for him with the help of friends and family.   • Cub group wins flag-bearing honour A local cub group will have the honour of carrying the District Cub Flag at a St George’s Day event later this month. 1st Bowerhill Cubs will carry the flag on Sunday 27th April at their campsite in Jubilee Wood, near Trowbridge, after winning the annual Cub Challenge. The event saw them compete against seven other packs in the district, completing various tasks. District lead volunteer, Christine Broom, said, “The Cubs had great fun moving from base to base, undertaking tasks such as mini pioneering, communication, first aid, making a card, good food, following trails, backwoods cooking (a method of cooking without using a kitchen or utensils), and science experiments.   • Melksham from the air – residents put on their history hats at association’s recent talk Around 85 people, including 36 visitors, gathered to learn all about Historic Melksham from the Air at the Melksham and District Historical Association’s talk last month. Showing photos from the association’s extensive photographic catalogue along with video footage, the audience were taken higher and higher via the church roof to factory chimneys, paramotors, planes and drones. “There is a link with EastEnders here because Aerofilms, who took the photo of the Avon, also took the composite aerial photos for the original title sequence for EastEnders,” explained chair of the association, Paul Carter.   • Melksham Times Past The identification of Titanic’s unknown child A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis FOR 95 years, the body of a young boy remained unidentified. He was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with the memorial stone reading, “Erected to the memory of an unknown child whose remains were recovered after the disaster to the Titanic April 15th 1912.” The body of the fair-haired toddler was the fourth person pulled from the ocean by crewman Clifford Crease, from the recovery ship CS Mackay-Bennett, on 21st April 1912 and was the youngest recovered victim of the RMS Titanic. Descriptions were publicised to try to identify the boy: Male, estimated to be two years old with fair hair, wearing a grey coat with fur on collar and cuffs, brown serge frock, brown petticoat, flannel garment, pink woollen singlet, brown shoes and stockings, probably a third-class passenger.   • Fun football fundraiser returns in memory of local teenager A fun football fundraiser is being held this month in memory of Melksham teenager Ben Smith, who died three years ago after being assaulted on a night out in Bath. The event, on Sunday 27th April at Oakfield Stadium – home of Melksham Town FC – is being held to raise funds for the charities that supported Ben’s family after his death. These include the Ben Saunders Foundation, which raises money for children and young adults with cancer; SmileForJoel, which supports families torn apart by murder and terrorism; and One Punch UK, which raises awareness about the devastation one punch can cause.   • Community space hosts Healing Café training session for the region A community space in the heart of Melksham hosted a training day for Christians across the region to learn more about setting up Healing Cafés in their local towns. Over 30 people from different church groups gathered on 31st March at ‘that meeting space’ in the Market Place for a day of practical teaching by a team from Catalyst4Healing (C4H). Groups from towns including Yeovil, Shaftesbury and Salisbury, as well as more locally from Bradford-on-Avon, Box, Devizes and Melksham, attended the session to learn more about running their own Healing Cafes.   • Planning starts for Melksham Open Gardens The team behind Melksham Open Gardens are busy planning for this year’s event and are calling for people to get involved. Due to be held on Sunday 20th July, the event sees residents from across town open their gardens to the public and allow the community to enjoy their hard work in aid of The Children’s Society. Organiser Lesley Windebank said, “The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming and many people are now thinking about their gardens. “However, the members of The Children’s Society in Melksham are thinking about scones, fancy cakes and white tablecloths.
