Artist Shelley Ashko-ski, who is based in Shaw, has been elected a member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art [SGFA]. She joins more than 130 professional illustrators, painters and printmakers recognised for their high level of ability in drawing.
Shelley said, “I am delighted and honoured to have been elected as an associate member to the Society of Graphic Fine Arts. I have always been passionate about the often underrated medium of drawing and it is wonderful to be recognised for excellence in this field.
“I am hugely excited about the opportunities being part of this nationally recognised organisation brings, which will include the chance to learn from experienced and talented artists and to exhibit my own work with them in galleries across the UK.”
Shelley grew up in Melksham and after studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University, she spent nearly 20 years as a secondary school teacher. Three years ago Shelley embarked on a new career as a freelance artist. Her work explores a diverse range of themes, but high-quality drawing provides a consistent foundation for everything she does. Shelley has worked hard to build a successful business with a loyal following. She is committed to her local community and often contributes to local events and charities.
President of the SGFA, Les Williams said. “The Society has a long and distinguished history. It’s the only national art society whose sole aim is to promote drawing, and we are delighted to welcome Shelley as one of our newest members.”
Established in 1919, the Society of Graphic Fine Art exists to promote and exhibit works of high quality in colour or black and white with the emphasis on good drawing and draughtsmanship, in pencil, pen, brush, charcoal, conté or any of the forms of original printmaking, as well as any original artwork including paintings, which demonstrate evidence of drawing by hand.
The society holds an annual ‘Open’ exhibition in London for members and non-members who submit work for selection, and several ‘Members Only’ exhibitions with no selection in London and the regions.
