EMPLOYEES from local manufacturing firm Herman Miller have been helping out in the community as part of the company’s Day of Purpose.
Company volunteers assisted at the town’s food bank and at Berryfield Village Hall last month as part of the annual event, which sees Herman Miller—part of the MillerKnoll collective of brands—close its facilities worldwide, giving employees a full day to give back to their communities.
Facilities administrator Jenny Freeman said, “Leading up to our volunteer day, we held a collection at our Melksham factory, Portal Mill, for non-perishable food items, Christmas treats, and advent calendars.
“On the day, Kay and Maurice from the food bank welcomed us warmly. Before we started, they shared the food bank’s origins and gave an overview of the number of individuals, couples, families, and children they currently support. This year alone, thousands of food parcels have been distributed to those in need.
“During our time there, we packed food parcels, wrapped gifts for adults, and prepared stockings for children. For perspective, we handled over 8,000 tea bags, more than 10 kilograms of coffee, and 50 kilograms of sugar.
“As we approach Christmas, we will continue collecting donations of advent calendars and festive foods. We also received a generous £100 voucher donation, which will be used to purchase food items for children—a need highlighted by Kay and Maurice. A permanent food bank donation basket remains in our canteen for anyone able to contribute, with monthly drop-offs arranged.”
Another group of employees volunteered at Berryfield Village Hall, where they painted the hall. Shona Holt, the chair of Berryfield Village Hall, said, “They sent along a lovely gang of volunteers who painted the main hall space and foyer in two hours flat! The hall looks like new again.”
