What was Melksham like in the 1950s? That is the subject of the next meeting of the Melksham & District Historical Association which will be held on Thursday 15th September at 7.30 pm in Melksham Assembly Hall. There is a £3 charge for visitors.
“As this is our 60th Anniversary year, members of the committee will look back at Melksham as it used to be before the organisation was started,” said a spokesperson for the association. There have been so many big changes, it should be a very interesting evening.
It’s been a positive year so far for the association following the enforced lockdowns of the pandemic. The group was concerned that none of their members would return to their meetings but they say, as things turned out, they were so very wrong.
A spokesperson says, “We have held six meetings in the Assembly Hall and all have attracted between 50 and 60 members and visitors. The AGM was well attended and we all enjoyed the social part of the evening with The End of the Track providing the entertainment.
“The May visit to Trowbridge Museum and June visit to Calne Heritage Centre were much enjoyed by a goodly number of members and the July outing to Bristol, with a river trip downstream to Portishead and back, was fully booked.
“We are fortunate to have such a healthy number of members, but have the same problem as so many other organisations. It is very difficult to recruit new committee members to keep the show on the road. However, we remain optimistic and have a programme in place for 2023.”
