MANCHESTER United are returning to town! Melksham Town will again host the Manchester United legends for another thrilling match and tickets are already selling like hot cakes!
After last year’s successful match against Melksham Town that saw a 2,000-strong crowd fill the stands at Town’s old ground at the Conigre, the Manchester United legends are returning to Melksham to play at the new Oakfield Stadium.
A Select XI made up of ex-professionals from the local scene, picked by Melksham Town chair Darren Perrin, will kick off against the former United players at 2pm on Sunday 12th November.
“It is absolutely brilliant for the football club and the community that Manchester United have agreed to come back and we are delighted that they get to play at our new stadium this time,” said Darren.
“I think it’s fair to say that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the last occasion and we have decided to go one further by inviting some very well-known ex- professionals to play in the select XI team. Ticket sales have gone crazy already for the day!”
“The Manchester United legends team will be very similar to the one that played last year including stars like David May, Denis Irwin, Lee Martin, Mike Duxbury, Clayton Blackmore, Russell Beardsmore, Peter Davenport, Andy Ritchie, Arthur Albiston, Frank Stapleton, Sammy McIlroy and Fraser Digby.
“Two ex-Melksham players, Fitzroy Simpson (Manchester City/Swindon Town) and Matthew Bound (Southampton/Swansea City), will hopefully play for the Select XI and we’re hoping the squad will include Daryl Clarke (Bristol Rovers manager), Steve Phillips (Bristol City), Scott Murray (Bristol City), Gary Owers (Sunderland/Bristol City and current Bath City manager), Steve White (Swindon Town), Jason Drysdale (Newcastle United/Swindon Town) and Micky Bell (Bristol City). Dave Mehew (Bristol Rovers), Lewis Haldane (Bristol Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday), and Steve Claridge (Portsmouth/Leicester City).
“For the special day, Melksham Town Football Club will be showing their support and raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust with an auction packed full of great prizes and 25% of ticket sale profits being donated to the cause.
“The club is delighted to support this cause and already would like to thank Bournemouth player Tyrone Mings, who is also attending the fixture, for donating a signed Bournemouth shirt; Brian Tinnion who has donated two Bristol City tickets for a championship game and a signed Bristol City shirt; and Bristol Rovers manager Daryl Clarke who has given us a signed Bristol Rovers shirt. There will be plenty of other items up for auction on the day.”
Darren has also promised a very special surprise for everyone who comes along on the day. “There will also be something in use for the first ever time at the ground and I can confirm it will have the WOW affect on everyone that attends, but I do not want to give anything away just yet!”
