SITTING pride of place in the new-look Market Place are two stone benches and a circular seating area, designed and made by local stonemason Jim Wheel.
About the inspiration behind his design, Jim said, “I heard that the council wanted something to enhance the Market Place once it had been completed.
“I liked the idea of a 360-degree seat, as it gives people the option of choosing which aspect of the town they want to look at.
“Also, it was important to include the planter in the middle as this links in to something that is already a big feature in the town – having plenty of flowers around – especially now Melksham has won gold at South West in Bloom. It was great to see the photo of the committee in the last issue of Melksham News celebrating their win on the new seating area.
“I’m really proud of the finished product. It’s really nice to do something for the town.”
Jim and his team were also responsible for the restoration of the pillars at the entrance of Place Road, creating a replica stone ball (technically called a finial), to sit opposite the other ball that was restored.
