Melksham were looking for a win in their last game of the season against visitors Warminster to maintain their position in the league table.
The visitors’ back line had other ideas and were first on the score sheet, with quick hands and elusive running to score the first try, the extra points added with a drop kick conversion.
Melksham were quick to respond after the line out ball found fly half Callum Hurn taking a line through defending tacklers and stretching for the line. Hurn slotting his conversion to level the score. The home team continued to pressurise the visitors in their own half, Ben Brown making a fine interception to score just a few minutes later, Hurn adding the extras.
Melksham, always aware of the threat from the visitors, continued with the pressure, testing the visitors’ defence, Kieren Jenkins receiving a loose ball to power in for Melksham’s third try. Hurn adding the extras, taking the score to 21-7 at half time.
The visitors hit back in the second-half with another try from the backs, showing their sevens-style running skills. The home team forwards dug deep and battled on, a driving maul held up over the line and the advantage lost. The struggle between the two sides for the next score continued for some time, the logjam being broken by a superb individual score from the visiting winger, to bring them within two points.
Melksham rallied and again pressurised the visitors who coughed up a penalty, struck by Hurn, to take the score 5 points clear and remaining so to the end of the game, the home team winning 24 – 19. Man of the match awarded to Callum Hurn.
